Dave Bautista is a big man who became a legendary WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) wrestler and is also a known actor in popular films. The professional wrestler at WWE, known as Batista and The Animal, has also worked as a nightclub bouncer, bodybuilder, MMA fighter, and actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Portraying Drax The Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy really catapulted the name of this man of Filipino descent.
Since then Bautista has also appeared in four different MCU films, as well as the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Outside of the MCU, he has appeared in films such as Specter James Bond 007, Blade Runner 2049, Stuber, My Spy, and many more. He is a scary-looking actor who can act funny to entertain his audience. 1. He was Into Breakdancing
Dave Bautista didn't really like sports when he was a teenager. According to the book that was released by Bautista, one thing he loves is breakdancing. He spent most of his youth hanging out in a breakdance group that often tried out the latest dance moves that were popular at the time.
Bautista grew up in Washington DC during the breakdancing rush of the 1980s. Dave Bautista remembers how he and his friends traveled to the center of the United States capital for breakdancing. He and his friends often gather until the early hours of the morning to hone their breakdancing skills. When he was a WWE wrestler, Bautista even did his flagship breakdancing move in a promo for WWE Summerslam.
2. He Had Worked as a Bouncer
At the age of 17, Dave Bautista lived alone and had to work as a nightclub bouncer. He was later fired from his job after being arrested for a fight that left two of his customers injured, one of whom was unconscious. As a result he was sentenced to one year of probation in prison.
While it might be hard to imagine, Bautista also worked that summer as a lifeguard at a swimming pool. Eventually he started to focus on bodybuilding. Bautista has repeatedly said that his bodybuilding work saved his life from poverty
3. Becomes a Wrestler at 31
In his late 20s, Dave Bautista couldn't afford Christmas gifts for his two daughters. He had no choice but to ask his boss to give him some money so he could buy his two daughters a Christmas present. It was then that Bautista realized the difficulties in his life and said “I seem to be stuck in a life that is going nowhere. When I reflect and think, what can I do with myself? I didn't have a higher education."
Bautista, who has no degree or job training certificate, realizes that he still has a great build. He finally thought of becoming a professional wrestler for the sake of his family.
He made his debut in Ohio Valley Wrestling in 2000. He was successfully promoted to the main wrestler roster two years later. Bautista was able to show his talent to the world of WWE wrestling by winning the WWE championship title six times and the Tag Team champion four times.
4. A Successful Acting Career
After gaining fame as a professional wrestler in WWE. Dave Bautista started his acting career as a cameo in a comedy show. After that acting debut, he went on to pursue acting as a strongman appearing in low-budget films such as The House of The Rising Sun and The Man of Iron Fist in 2014.
He got his big break in his career when he accepted the role of Drax The Destroyer in Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy and Guardians of The Galaxy Vol 2. He also appeared in 2 Avengers films. After being famous for the character Drax he played, Dave Bautista expanded his portfolio with his stunning acting performances in Specter and Blade Runner 2049. Bautista got the main role in Stuber which made him co-star with Iko Uwais, an international actor from Indonesia. His leading role is also memorable in the film Army of the Dead by Zack Snyder.
5. He Hired Acting Coach
Following Dwayne Johnson, Dave Bautista is one of the most successful wrestlers in turning to acting. The audience was satisfied with his role as Drax The Destroyer who is often referred to as one of Bautista’s most memorable characters.
Bautista has worked hard for all of his success. But as it turned out, he humbly admitted that he wasn't the best as an actor. When he first started acting, Bautista realized that his acting skills were not good. He hired an acting coach who he always consulted until now. 6. He Cried After Being Cast as Drax
While stopping in Singapore with the Guardians of the Galaxy Press Tour, Dave Bautista admitted that he burst into tears when he found out that he had landed the role of Drax The Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy.
He was on his way to the gym at the time and Bautista's manager called him. His manager told him that he was cast as Drax. Instead of going to the gym, Bautista went home to cry because he was both happy and touched by his achievements. According to Bautista, Drax's role was something that changed his life.
It was hard for Bautista to leave the world of wrestling, but getting a lifelong dream role like Drax was life changing. Previously he had to work hard and fight for his life, until he had to repeatedly join auditions. With the iconic Drax in his portfolio, Bautista built up his reputation in international entertainment.
7. A Unique Hobby
When appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2015, Dave Bautista revealed that he has a quite unique hobby, namely collecting antique metal lunch boxes. He owns more than 150 metal lunch boxes featuring comic book superheroes like Superman and the Green Hornet. He considered the Beatles' antique lunchbox the most valuable of all because it could be worth six thousand dollars.
8. He Offered to Play Zombie in The Walking Dead without Pay
Dave Bautista has revealed that he had always wanted to appear in AMC's hit zombie drama series The Walking Dead. He even offered to work on the show for free. Unfortunately, his offer was rejected, because his physique and body size as a professional wrestler were not suitable for being a zombie.
Bautista told Empire magazine, “I kept trying for years to get to play on The Walking Dead. I said I would come to the shoot and play a zombie for free. But they say, you're too big to be a zombie."
9. He Rejected a Role in The Suicide Squad
The Suicide Squad is full of big stars like Sylvester Stallone, Idris Elba, and John Cena. Turns out, Bautista could actually be one of the film's actors too but he turned down the role. The reason was so that he could star in Zack Snyder's film Army of the Dead.
10. Lost to Triple H in His Final WWE Fight
During the decade of the 2010s, Dave Bautista left WWE but returned to the wrestling ring three times. In his last appearance in 2019, he had a feud with Triple H. They faced off at the Wrestlemania event and Bautista suffered a loss. Bautista said he was delighted to be able to give Triple H such a win as he had done for him years before.
