Encanto is a Disney animated film released in theaters in November 2021. It is now also available to watch on Disney Plus. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may be limiting Encanto's time in theaters, but on Disney Plus, the film can be watched over and over again. With Lin-Manuel Miranda's amazing songs such as We Don't Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure, this musical genre film has gone viral because it is loved by many people from all over the world.
Are you curious about Encanto which presents the typical Colombian festivities? Here are 10 facts you might not know about this film.
1. Encanto Means Charm in Spanish
Since the story of this film is set in the Spanish-speaking country of Colombia, you can translate "Encanto" from Spanish which means charm, or it can also mean allure. Not only is the casita or house in this film enchanted with magical wonders, but the entire Madrigal family as the film's central characters also brings with it the charm and excitement of the title.
2. Lin-Manuel Miranda Inspires Bruno's Memes
Actor John Leguizamo becomes the voice actor of Bruno, a member of the Madrigal family who does not want to be talked about by other family members. The Madrigal family is a Colombian family, and Leguizamo himself was also born in Bogotá, Colombia.
However, many fans see the resemblance between Bruno and the film's songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, both in appearance and in his important role in this film project. Although Miranda hasn't publicly said that he ever thought about playing Bruno, the idea that Miranda would be a good fit for the role has inspired various memes that are circulating on social media.
3. Bruno is Hiding in The Movie Poster
Take a good look at the Encanto poster, packed with the Madrigal family. The entire Madrigal family is featured on his film poster. Including Bruno, a member of the Madrigal family who is mysterious and doesn't like to be talked about by other family members. Bruno can be seen hiding under his green cloak on the far left of the poster, next to a tree trunk.
4. Beauty and the Beast Inspired The Movie's Opening Song
If you remember the opening scene of the Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast in 1991, in that scene Belle walks around her village singing about the people she knows there. The concept inspired Miranda's opening song scene in Encanto's film The Family Madrigal, where Mirabel introduces all of her family members and their magical powers.
"I was really inspired by Belle from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ with that opening number that just lays out the town," Miranda told the Los Angeles Times. We wanted to show the complexity of a family on the screen. That means we have to embrace them, and not let them get dragged into a storyline where you tend to focus on the main characters and their adventures. We have to explain who the Madrigal family is, how their relationship is, what they can do, and how they relate to our main characters." Miranda said.
5. Mirabel Skirt Design Pays Respect To Other Family Members
Clothing design is very important in the film Encanto. All members of the Madrigal family have a symbol somewhere on their clothes that denotes their magical powers. For example, the barbell symbol on Luisa's skirt, which has a strong character, or the sunshine earrings that Pepa wears, are very fitting because Pepa's emotions can control the weather.
Mirabel begins the story without having any magical abilities. But she embroidered all the symbols on her skirt, including a wax symbol for Abuela, a chameleon symbol for the shape-shifting Camilo, an animal symbol for Antonio, and more.
"My favorite detail in the Encanto movie is that every character has a magic symbol embroidered on their clothes, except for Mirabel who has the symbol of her whole family," one fan of the film wrote on Twitter.
The film's director, Jared Bush, revealed that Mirabel's father, Agustín, also represented his family in the symbols on his clothes. "Agustín brought his three daughters into his outfit - flowers for Isabela, one sock with the Luisa symbol, one sock in the embroidered Mirabel style," Bush said in a tweet.

6. Mirabel Actually Has The Greatest Magical Power Of The Other Family Members
When Mirabel, who was still a child tried to receive her magical powers, nothing seemed to happen to her. Mirabel seems to be the only Muggle or No-maj in the Madrigal family, if we use the Harry Potter term.
But in a later scene in Encanto, when Mirabel is finally able to put her hand on the magic doorknob after a failed childhood attempt, it revives the Madrigal family's casita or magical house. Perhaps Mirabel's magical power is the greatest power in this film.
That power serves to protect her family as well as their home and all the magical abilities of each separate family member. Mirabel's magical power can unite all her family's magical powers to always be together and grow to be even bigger.
7. Cerberus from Disney’s Hercules Appears in Luisa's Song
The song Surface Pressure is a song in the film Encanto which managed to beat the popularity of the song Let It Go from the hit Disney film Frozen. In the song Surface Pressure, Luisa wonders in the lyrics, "Did Hercules ever say 'Yo, I don't want to fight Cerberus?'" Luisa is shown as Hercules who is fighting Cerberus in the scene.
Cerberus is a three-headed dog monster who guards the gates of the afterlife in Greek mythology, but it could also be a reference for another Disney movie. In the 1997 Disney film Hercules, the protagonist Herc tames Cerberus, so this reference in Luisa's song can be a reminder of the popular Disney animated film.
8. Lin-Manuel Miranda's Sister Inspired Luisa's song
In the song Surface Pressure, Luisa sings how the burden of family is often placed on her without being asked, because Luisa is used to carrying it on her own without complaining. This song was inspired by the songwriter's older sister, Miranda herself. Her older sister's name was Luz, who was six years older than her.
"She bears a much bigger responsibility than I do — I'm well aware that I'm the little brother made easy on everything — so Surface Pressure is an expression of love for my older sister," Miranda told The Washington Post.
Luz's name does sound like Luisa, even though there are similarities in her abilities at a young age. "I remember my parents waking my older sister to make a He-Man toy for my Christmas present before I woke up," Miranda told Variety. "They wanted the toy to be fully assembled by the time I woke up on Christmas morning."
9. Mirabel is the First Disney Female Protagonist to Wear Glasses
So far, there has been no main protagonist in a Disney animated film who wears glasses, Mirabel in Encanto is the first in this regard. One of the reasons is that its name comes from the Spanish word “Mira” which means “to see”. It is also meant to symbolize one of the film's main themes, which is seeing things and people from a different perspective.
Mirabel's song The Family Madrigal is the fastest song an animated film character has ever performed in Disney history.
10. This Movie Has Various Easter Eggs That Reference Other Disney Movies
Like every Disney movie, Encanto is full of easter eggs that reference other Disney movies. At the beginning of the scene in Isabela's song What Else Can I Do?, the cactus plant in her room is in the shape of a Mickey Mouse, with one large circle in the middle and two smaller circles on top. In the scene of the song Waiting on Miracle, the shape of Mickey Mouse's head can be seen on the fireworks.
In Bruno's study, a picture of what looks like Mickey the Witch from Fantasia can be seen on his wall. The scene from the song Surface Pressure makes for some obvious Disney movie references, specifically about Hercules and his fight against Cerberus.
The iconic plant from the movie WALL.E appears also tucked away in Bruno's hideout. The brown boot containing a green sprout like in the movie WALL.E was on a shelf in Bruno's room.
