10 Facts about the Going Merry, the Ship that Started the Straw Hat Adventure!
Here are some facts about the Going Merry, the first ship that brought the Straw Hat crew to sail!
Anime & Manga | 16 December
The Going Merry was the ship that carried the Straw Hat crew on an adventure from East Blue to Enies Lobby. Although it looked just like an ordinary ship, Going Merry was already considered as one of the "nakama". In this article, Dunia Games wants to talk about some facts about Going Merry in One Piece!
1. The Ship Size
The Going Merry was a caravel-type ship. The caravel is a type of ship developed by the Portuguese in the 15th century. The size of the caravel is smaller when compared to the Galleon, but the caravel ship has more maneuverability.
The design of the Going Merry itself was inspired by the caravel ships in real life. Oda also added everything in the caravel ship on Going Merry.
2. The Designer
Almost every One Piece reader knows that the Thousand Sunny was designed by Franky, Iceberg, and the members of Galley-La. But perhaps not many know about the designer of the Going Merry. As seen at the end of the Syrup Village arc, the Going Merry was designed by Merry, one of Kaya's butlers.
Who crafted the ship after Merry designed the design is still unknown. It is possible that Merry did it himself because he was quite skilled in designing ships. The answer may be revealed by Eiichiro Oda on the upcoming SBS.
3. Farewell with Going Merry
The Going Merry took massive damage upon entering the Grand Line. With the crew lacking proper ship mechanics at the time, Merry was badly damaged and its trip to Enies Lobby was his last.
After rescuing the crew, Merry was given a Viking-style funeral, which was a tradition by the Vikings. Merry was considered a part of the Straw Hat crew. At that time, the Straw Hat crew really felt devastated and could not help but cry.
4. Its Mechanisms
Going Merry was not a 'modern' ship like the Thousand Sunny, where the Thousand Sunny has a steering wheel to make it easier for the helmsman, while the Merry only has a jib and a central steering wheel which made things a little more complicated.
Despite this, Going Merry was actually a highly maneuverable ship and was capable of repeatedly bringing the Straw Hats to safety. In the end, the Going Merry was replaced by the Sunny Go made by Franky.
5. Its Firepower
Going Merry didn't have great firepower given its small size. But this did not mean Merry was helpless in combat. Merry had four cannons, one of which was in the bow pointing forward. Two cannons were on each side of the ship, and one on the rear.
Those cannons were not often used by the Straw Hat crew as they usually avoid combat by running away or bouncing cannonballs fired using Luffy's rubber body.

6. Its Damage
Going Merry took a lot of damage during its journey. Its head was repeatedly damaged, especially when the crew reached Skypiea. The guardrail was patched several times by Usopp, and the sides were also repaired several times.
Thanks to Usopp's care, Merry was always repaired when it got damaged. But when the frame breaks, Merry was beyond saving, as Iceberg explained.
7. Its Endurance
Although Merry was not made with high-quality materials like Adam Wood, it's quite durable. In fact, its durability cannot be explained by even the most experienced shipbuilders. Merry survived the tremendous pressure after falling from Skypiea.
Even after Kaku declared Merry dead and released it from the waterfall at Water 7, Usopp's favorite ship survived and somehow it sailed to Enies Lobby alone.
8. Luffy's Favorite Spot on Going Merry
Unlike the rest of the Straw Hats, Luffy had his favorite spot on the Going Merry. As seen several times in the story, Luffy preferred to sit on the head of the ship. Luffy made that place to relax.
Merry himself looked happy when Luffy sat there. Luffy's habit of sitting on Merry's head didn't go away because he is also often seen sitting on Sunny's head.
9. The Real Going Merry
The Going Merry has its own replica in Japan. This is not too surprising, because One Piece is very popular in the world. While it may not be fully functional, the real Going Merry has been used at several exhibitions in Japan, usually sponsored by Shueisha and Toei Animation.
This replica was designed in early 2003. In 2005, the design of this replica showed how tough the Merry was after being damaged so many times on its way to Water 7.
10. The Ship Color
The Going Merry had several colors. Most of the colors on this ship were white and brown, but there was also red, and this was only seen in anime. In the manga, Merry might not look so beautiful because it's depicted as black and white.
