The name Sub-Zero was popular again after the rumors that said the character will appear in the new Mortal Kombat film. Not to mention Sub-Zero is played by an Indonesian actor, Joe Taslim. As Sub-Zero, Joe will face a Japanese actor, Hiroyuki Sanada who played Scorpion. 1. One of the 7 Main Characters of Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat is a fighting game franchise developed by Midway Games in 1992. The idea of the game was initiated by Ed Boon and John Tobias. At its initial release, Mortal Kombat only had 7 main characters, and one of them was Sub-Zero. At that time, Sub-Zero in the first Mortal Kombat game was played by Daniel Pesina who also played Scorpion and Johny Cage
2. Sub-Zero’s Power
Sub-Zero’s real name is Bi-Han and basically, he is a normal human. He obtained the power to manipulate ice from his father, a Cryomance who married a Chinese-American woman. The Cryomancer race is a race from Edenia that can manipulate air particles and moisture into ice.
In Mortal Kombat, Edenia was kicked out of Outworld and almost all of their people were slaughtered by Shao Kahn. Leaving only a few of Cryomancer descendants left, including Bi-Han and Kuai Liang, and Kuai Liang’s Student, Frost.
3. Kuai Liang is the Second Sub-Zero
In Mortal Kombat’s story, the first Sub-Zero is Bi-Han. But he was killed by Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat tournament. After knowing that his brother was murdered, Kuai Liang took the mantle of Sub-Zero and avenged his brother’s death. The grudge between the two characters creates a long dispute between Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
Despite the similarities with his brother, Kuai Liang has a different fighting style. He is the only fighter that can manipulate Chi. By channeling his Chi, Kuai Liang can increase his physical power. Allowing him to throw his opponents with his attacks.
4. The First Sub-Zero Revived as Noob Saibot
In the first Mortal Kombat tournament, Bi-Han or Sub-Zero was killed by Scorpion in a fight. So his brother, Kuai Liang took the mantle of Sub-Zero. Bi-Han was revived with a new costume and power. Bi-Han was revived by Quan Chi and with a new name, Noob Saibot.
5. Once Made Peace with Scorpion
Sub-Zero and Scorpion are destined to fight. But the dispute between the two is caused by grudge and slander committed by Quan Chi. The peace between Sub-Zero and Scorpion was told in Mortal Kombat X (2015), where Scorpion or Hanzo Hasashi found out that the one who killed Shirai Ryu was not Bi-Han but Quan Chi.

6. One of the Mortal Kombat Characters with a Spin-off
Mortal Kombat was a successful franchise in the 90s. It pushed the developer to start a spin-off of the character from the fighting game. The Sub-Zero spin-off game was titled Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero where the prequel took part years before the first Mortal Kombat game. The spin-off game is a side-scroller and tells the story of Bi-Han who is looking for an amulet for Quan Chi because his enemies tried to kill him.

In Mortal Kombat 9, Sub-Zero was transformed into an awesome ninja. Although he is a cyborg, Sub-Zero’s soul remains in the new body and helped his allies defeat Quan Chi

Besides appearing in NBA JAM Tournament Edition, Mortal Kombat also had a crossover with DC in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe that was released in 2008. After completing the story of Sub-Zero, gamers will see Sub-Zero deciding to become a superhero for the Earthrealm. At the end, Sub-Zero is seen with Batman’s mantle.
