It’s not a secret that the games on Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) are challenging. Even if the graphics are outdated, don’t expect to finish these games easily. These games have high difficulty and require high concentration to pass every stage. These are the hardest NES games picked by Dunia Games.
1. Contra
Contra one of the hardest NES games. The game released by Konami presents a side-scrolling shooter game that looked easy. But don’t expect to finish the stages without getting hit by the opponents. When the enemy starts shooting at you, you are in deep trouble. Make sure your fingers don’t slip when playing Contra because a slippery finger will cost you your life.
2. Kung Fu
Although Kung Fu may seem easy, don’t expect to beat the enemy that appears easily. The gameplay of this game is quite unique, you have to punch and kick the enemy at the right timing. Missing the timing will cause your attacks to miss. You need high concentration when fighting the boss’s character because when they are out, their subordinate will disturb you.
3. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
The third game from Castlevania series is nothing like the first two games difficulty-wise. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse not as easy as the past two games. You need patience and great anticipation to pass every stage in this game. Avoid obstacles, attack, and beat every enemy that appears all at once is a bothersome thing that usually happens in this game.
4. Mega Man
Like the other three games before, Mega-Man is similar. Here you will move Mega-Man to beat the robots at great difficulty. Every attack the robot launches are fast and comes in a large number so you have to move your character nimbly. If you let your guard down, then you will have a hard time passing the stages.
5. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!
As the name suggests, the final boss of this game is Mike Tyson! Before fighting him, you will face other boxers that are just as ferocious. However, every boxer has a special skill set. You have to memorize every move or you are guaranteed to be K.Oed by them.

6. Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden is a ninja-themed game that was released for NES. But, the game is similar to Mega-Man or Contra in essence. This classic game is one of the difficult NES games to beat. You have to face an uncountable amount of enemies and they will keep on coming while you are trying to pass every stage. When you are on stage 6-4, falling down or getting hit by an enemy will send you back to stage 6-1. How annoying!
7. Battletoads
The NES game developed by RARE is famous for its difficulty. In this Beat’em up PLatformer game, you will play as a toad. The game offers 3D and 2D levels. You have to beat every enemy and pass every obstacle that keeps on getting harder.
8. Super Mario Bros Lost Levels
Initially, the game is titled Super Mario Bros 2 and released in Japan on 3 June 1986. The sequel game is similar to the predecessor but with harder stages. Since the American market thought that the game is too difficult, the release is postponed. In the end, Nintendo renamed the game into Super Mario Bros Lost Levels with several additional tricks to give unlimited life.
9. Ghosts 'N Goblins
The run and gun platformer game released by Capcom in 1985 was released for arcade. Then released for NES too. In Ghost ‘N Goblins, you will play as a knight named Arthur. Arthur is tasked to save Princess Pin that was kidnapped by Satan, the Demon world King. you will die after getting two hits and the bosses are too difficult to kill. The gameplay makes it very challenging to finish the game.
10. The Adventures of Bayou Billy
Last but not least is The Adventures of Bayou Billy. The action game released by Konami requires the players to survive from incoming attacks coming from the bad guys lead by Godfather Gordon. To beat the bad guys without getting hit is almost impossible. Especially on Stage 4 and 5 where the stages are guaranteed to empty your health bar.
