When Naruto Uzumaki was born, a 9-tailed fox demon named Kurama was sealed into his body by his father, a great shinobi named Minato Namikaze. Since then, Naruto has lived with this powerful beast in his body and the two of them must find a way to get along with each other. The majority of the manga and anime are told from Naruto's point of view rather than Kurama's, but there's still a lot to learn about this 9-tailed fox demon along the way.

Did you know that in the pilot of Naruto, Kurama is actually Naruto's father? He is so powerful that he was able to annihilate five Bijuu on his own, despite only using half of his strength. Here are the 15 facts about Kurama, the 9-tailed fox demon who has always been with Naruto since birth.

1. This 9-Tailed Fox Demon is Based on Kitsune

This fact may be obvious from his appearance, but we must still point out that Kurama is based on Kitsune. A kitsune is a mythological creature from Japanese folklore that resembles a fox, and is known for its con artist-like demeanor with its ability to transform at will. The 9-tailed fox demon is known for his rivalry with Tanuki, the mythological creature that inspired Shukaku, the one-tailed mongoose demon that resides within Naruto's rival Gaara.

Even though they are naughty, they are loyal, and they never break their promises. Although Kurama wasn't like that at first, he eventually adopted those good qualities from Naruto Uzumaki.

As kitsune ages, the number of their tails, and their strength, increases. After about 1,000 years of age, its ninth tail grows. When this happens, his fur turns gold, and turns into Tenko or the sky fox god.

2. The 9-Tailed Fox Demon can Beat 5 Bijuu with Half of Its Power

Although every Bijuu or Tailed Beast possessed extraordinary strength, none of them could match Kurama's strength. He made this clear when the 9-tailed fox demon wiped the floor with five Bijuu despite only using half the Kyuubi's strength at the time. Konoha obviously kept the most dangerous Bijuu for their own village.

3. Mito Uzumaki is His First Jinchuuriki

The first Jinchuuriki to accommodate Kurama in was Mito Uzumaki, the wife of Hashirama Senju or the First Hokage. This 9-tailed fox demon was sealed within her body after Hashirama took control of it from Madara. Mito Uzumaki was likely chosen for the role due to her confidence and abundant chakra.

4. The 9-Tailed Fox Demon has 2 Chakra Nature

In the manga, Kurama is never seen using a certain type of nature transformation. However, in the anime, this 9-tailed fox demon breathes fire and creates a vortex using fire and wind release.

5. Kurama Might Change Naruto’s DNA

Naruto was born with a fox mustache on his face. This is the result of the development within his mother, whose body is suffused with Kurama's chakra.

Naruto's children, Boruto and Himawari, inherited this fox mustache too. Because Hinata gave birth to them, Boruto and Himawari couldn't get the 9-tailed fox's chakra like Naruto. Instead, it seems that Kyuubi alters Naruto's DNA in a way that can be passed down to his children.

6. Kurama is Afraid of Himawari

When Himawari awakens her Byakugan, she accidentally knocks out Naruto and Kurama at once with the Hyuga clan's signature Gentle Fist technique. After that, the 9-tailed fox started to freak out every time he saw Himawari, even if she wasn't using her Byakugan. Who would have thought that such a formidable 9-tailed demon would be afraid of an adorable girl?

7. Kurama is Naruto’s Father in the Pilot

The pilot of Naruto has a very different story from the Naruto that many fans know and love today. One of the main differences involves Kurama. In the pilot, Kurama is actually Naruto's father. After he attacked the village of Mount Oinari, he was defeated by nine different shinobi. Hiruzen was the only survivor, and he was the one who took care of his orphans.

8. Kurama Hated humans for One Reason

When Kurama was first sealed into Naruto's body, he hated humans and had little interest in interacting with them. His attitude changed as he got to know Naruto and learned to trust him.

While there's no way to justify Kyuubi's rampage and violence before being sealed, his hatred for humans is understandable. Every time he encountered them, he would be treated like a terrible threat to be restrained or like a tool used for the benefit of humans. Until his relationship with Naruto, he had no chance to form a genuine relationship with a human who cared about him.

9. Kurama Might be the Reason for naruto’s Sexy no Jutsu

Naruto's Sexy no Jutsu is one of the most bizarre techniques in his arsenal. Naruto used it to transform into curvaceous and scantily clad women, starting from when he was only twelve years old. This move was probably inspired by the mythological behavior of Kitsune. Kitsune are known to turn into attractive women to seduce men for evil reasons. Naruto even thought that Kushina's mother was a transformed version of Kurama when he first met her!

10. Kurama can Sense Negative Emotion

One of Kurama's lesser-known abilities is the power to sense negative emotions. He uses this ability both to feel hostility towards his opponents, and to bring Naruto's anger and hatred into battle.

11. Kurama Only Uses Half of His Power In Most of Naruto Storyline

Minato sealed the Yin half of Kurama into himself, and the Yang half into his newborn son, Naruto. When he died after that incident, half of the Yin was lost with Minato's life. The two halves of Yin and Yang were finally reunited, but the implications of such a split became extremely dire.

12. The Name May Refer to a Sacred Mountain

The name Kurama literally translates to or "nine Lamas". Lama became a Buddhist term referring to a spiritual master such as the Dalai Lama.

His name may also be inspired by Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain known as Sojobo's home. Sojobo is a Tengu who teaches Minamoto no Yoshitsune how to use the sword to fight against the Heike clan in Japanese samurai history.

13. He is the Only Tailed Beast to Use Susanoo

During the battle, Sasuke wrapped Kurama in his Susanoo, creating a jutsu called Majestic Attire Susanoo. This not only prevents Kurama's chakra from being suppressed and increases his defense, but also allows him to wield Susanoo's sword.

There is no evidence that he is the only Bijuu who can do this because it was this 9-tailed fox demon who had such a rare opportunity.

14. Kurama Has a Toy Figure in Boruto

Just because Kurama is a terrifying beast that once destroyed Konoha, doesn't mean he can’t have a toy figure for Konoha's children. In Boruto, there are rows of Bjiuu toys, including the very rare Kuraa-ma. Naruto spent an episode trying to get one of these toys for his daughter Himawari. But ended up only being able to get a toy version of Shukaku.

15. Kurama Must Be Sealed in Gedo Mazo Last

To revive Juubi, Akatsuki tried to collect all the Bijuu and put them in the Gedo Mazo statue. These rituals must be performed in a certain order, or the statue will collapse. Kurama should be the last to be sealed. Was this because he was much stronger than all the other Tailed Beasts, or was it just a ritual requirement that had nothing to do with his strength? It's hard to say.

Those are the 15 facts about Kurama, the nine-tailed fox demon who has been with Naruto since his birth. Are there other facts that we missed? You can share them in the comment section.
