Masashi Kishimoto, a popular mangaka who created Naruto, is really good at making stories about the ninja world and conflicts between shinobi. The length of Naruto's adventure doesn’t bore the fans because besides the storytelling, he presents many interesting characters like Orochimaru.

This antagonist in Naruto has an intimidating look thanks to his pale face, long straight hair, and his long tongue, as well as his face that looks like a venomous snake. Who is Orochimaru, the androgynous Legendary Sannin? Read the following facts about him below!

1. Hiruzen Sarutobi’s Most Privileged Protege

Konoha’s team 7 always consists of talented people. In the past, Hiruzen Sarutobi was the teacher of Team 7 that consisted of the young Orochimaru, Tsunade, and Jiraiya. But out of the three, Orochimaru is the most favored

The reason why he is more favored is because of his outstanding instinct, ability, and brain. He was calm and collected when he was young, different from when he was older.

2. Hiruzen Sarutobi Expected Him to the Next Hokage

Hiruzen Sarutobi favored Orochimaru and expected him to be the next Hokage in line. From the beginning Hiruzen Sarutobi had planned for Orochimaru to be his successor after his term ended. Although there are other great ninja in Konoha.

Hiruzen Sarutobi is determined to make Orochimaru his successor. In the end, Hiruzen Sarutobi was the person to find out about Orochimaru’s disturbing experiment done on the land of fire.

3. Betrayed His Mentor

Orochimaru got the most love and attention out of all Hiruzen Sarutobi’s students, but he failed to repay him. Instead, he betrayed his teacher’s expectations.

After battling Hanzo of the Salamander during the Shinobi War, Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade become the Legendary Sannin. Orochimaru got drunk in power and started experimenting on humans.

But despite his humanitarian crime, the third Hokage still cared for him deeply and didn’t execute Orochimaru for his crime. In the end, Hiruzen Sarutobi died at the hands of Orochimaru.

4. Completed Thousands of Missions

Although he betrayed Konoha in the end, he still completed thousands of missions during his active days as a shinobi.

He completed 1.468 missions consisting of 16 D missions, 332 C missions, 521 B missions, 491 A missions, and 108 S missions.

Compared to Naruto, he has completed 16 missions during his active days. 

5.“Chaos” and “Destroy” are His Favorite Word

Orochimaru’s favorite words are words with a negative connotation. The first word is "chaos" (混沌, konton).

His second favorite word is "destroy" (破壊, hakai). He truly lived his life based on these two words because his life is full of chaos and destruction.

6. Masters 5 Basic Nature Transformation

Only few shinobi in Naruto can master the 5 basic nature transformation and one of them is Orochimaru. He also masters Yin and Yang release and Wind Release. Despite mastering many nature transformations, he favored Wind and Earth Release.

7. Kuchiyose Manda

With a snake-like face, Orochimaru’s Kuchiyose animal is a snake named Manda, one of the powerful snake of the Ryuchi cave. Why did the snake willingly follow him?

8. A Dangerous Criminal

Orochimaru’s crime is beyond pardon for Konoha. He secretly kidnapped the villagers ranging from shinobi, adults and kids to be experimented on.

His other crimes include destruction of the Konoha facility, terrorizing the village, attacking other shinobi and killing Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage. He also killed Rasa, the fourth Kazekage, ahead of the Chunin exam

He also taught many of the missing-nin who attacked Konoha. He also attempted to kill his former teammates Jiraiya and Tsunade. He is also one of the people that started the Fourth Shinobi War.

9. Established the Sound Village, Otogakure

Orochimaru who escaped from Konoha founded a new village named Otogakure for him to do his experiments.

He claimed that Otogakure is founded so that skilled shinobi can find their true purpose in life. But it was all a lie because Orochimaru used them for his experiments.

10. Can’t Use Sage Mode

Before the revival of the 4 Hokage during the Fourth Shinobi War thanks to Edo Tensei, Orochimaru couldn't use Sage mode. Despite spending his training with the White Snake Sage of the Ryuchi Cave, Orochimaru failed to execute Sage Mode because he no longer has his real body.

After the war he used the White Zetsu reinforced with the Hashirama cells as his vessel allowing him to use the sage mode.

11. Ex-Akatsuki

Orochimaru also exploited Akatsuki that was founded by Tendo Pain under the guidance of Obito. His goal is to target the strongest shinobi in Akatsuki and it falls to Itachi Uchiha.

Orochimaru’s time with Akatsuki was short because Itachi stopped him before he got to do anything.

12. Unable to Take Over Uchiha Clan’s Body

Orochimaru is much more wicked and twisted than Akatsuki. He wanted to take over Itachi’s body because he wanted to own Uchiha’s power and the remaining Sharingan in Itachi and Sasuke.

Knowing that he can’t win against Itachi, he decided to target the other Uchiha, Sasuke. But he still failed and was only able to leave a cursed seal on Sasuke.

13. Uses Other People’s Body

During his fight with Hiruzen Sarutobi, it was revealed that Orochimaru used the body he experimented on as his vessel

His forbidden experiment allowed him to use a human’s body as a vessel and extend his life. His real body no longer exists and this is something he has always done to remain young.

14. The Most Cruel Ninja

Orochimaru killed 60 babies implanted with Hashirama cells for an experiment, making him the cruelest ninja in history. Yamato is the only baby that survived the experiment.

The number of lives he killed for his experiment also made him the sadistic character in Naruto, it’s not surprising that Masashi Kishimoto designed him to look like a snake.

15. Repent and Turned His Life Around

Despite their crimes, some can still turn their life around. When the Fourth Shinobi War breaks out, Orochimaru realized the result of his actions and helped to stop the war.

Madara Uchiha who escaped the Edo Tensei joined hands with Obito to destroy everything pushing Orochimaru to help the alliance. He and Sasuke revived the four dead Hokage with Edo Tensei to help stop the war.

Even the man is invited to attend Naruto and Hinata’s wedding. His son, Mitsuki, is a good kid who is now a member of the new Team 7 with Boruto and Sarada.
