1. Roger Already Prepared His Name
Ace was born shortly after his father, Gol D. Roger, died. Before that, his mother, Portgas D. Rouge needed to fight to avoid Cipher Pol and the Marines for months. Based on Rouge's words, Roger had already prepared a name for their child.
If it's a girl, it would be named Ann, while if it's a boy, it would be Ace. Shortly after giving him his name, Rouge died.
2. His True Name
Before he died, Rouge said that Ace's full name should be Gol D. Ace. This was because Roger asked for it when they were together. But when he grew up, Ace hated his father for leaving him and his mother. That's why Ace used his mother's name instead, resulting in Portgas D. Ace.
According to Ace, Roger was a useless human who didn't consider the title "father" by him.
3. Was Born in South Blue
Many think that Ace was born East Blue, precisely in the Kingdom of Goa because he grew up with Luffy and Sabo there. When in fact, Ace was born on a small island called Baterilla which is located in South Blue.
Rouge lived on the island until Ace's birth. Before surrendering to the Navy, Roger visited him often. After Ace was born, Garp took him at Rouge's request. He was then raised by Dadan who later met Luffy and Sabo.
4. Born After 20 Years in the Womb
Due to the intelligence of the Cipher Pol group, the World Government and the Navy suspected Roger of having children because he frequently visited the Baterilla island. To end Roger's bloodline, they checked the island for a year to make sure that Roger have no descendants.
They didn't know that Rouge was carrying Ace for 20 months. It sounds impossible, but Ace was able to step on the earth.
5. His Debut
Ace started sailing 3 years before Luffy started his adventure. He was first seen at the end of the Drum Island arc, chapter 154 in the mange, or episode 91 in the anime. After that, Ace appeared in the Arabasta arc and was introduced as Luffy's older brother. Thanks to his help, Luffy and his friends managed to escape from Smoker's pursuit.
6. His Pirate Crew
Ace set his sail at the age of 17. He sailed with the aim that the world would recognize him. In the end, Ace made his group, the Spade Pirates. His first crew was Deuce and at that time they were quite popular.
After being defeated by Shirohige, Ace decided to join his group. At that moment, all the Spade Pirates also followed him.
7. Denied the Offer for Joining Shichibukai
Because it was quite popular at the time, Ace, who was still very young, was offered a Shichibukai position. Ace turned down this offer because his goal was to make the world know him. If he became a Shichibukai, then Ace would not be more famous.
That's when Ace targeted Shirohige who's known as the strongest man in the world. If he could kill him, then Ace would immediately be famous throughout the world.

In Ace, Sabo, & Luffy's flashback, there's a scene where Ace used Haoshoku Haki. But, maybe you don't know that Ace has also seen using Busoshoku Haki, right? Ace awakened his powers in Sabaody, precisely when he confronted the Vice Admiral, where he first used his Busoshoku.
9. His Special Birth Date
Ace is one of the most popular One Piece characters, as well as his birthday. Ace was born on January 1, which is also celebrated as the new year. Uniquely, Eiichiro Oda also has the same birthday. Plus, Gol D. Roger's birthday is one day before Ace, which is December 31.

Before the time skip, when Ace was still alive, he had a bounty of 550 million Belly. This was the highest known bounty before the time skip. Uniquely, Ace had the same bounty as his close friend, Little Oars Jr.
11. Changed Dream
Since childhood, Ace, Luffy, and Sabo have had a dream to sail in the ocean. Ace wanted to be known to the world by sailing as a pirate, so did Sabo. Meanwhile, Luffy wanted to be the Pirate King. 12. The Beginning of Consuming the Mera Mera no Mi
Based on One Piece Novel A, Ace first found the Mera Mera no Mi when he was stranded on an island in East Blue called Sixis. Initially, Ace offered the fruit to a person who happened to be on the same island with him, Masked Deuce, but he refused. In the end, Ace ate the fruit.
13. His Devil Fruit's Weakness
In the One Piece canon, no Logia devil fruit can make the user control water. The Mera Mera no Mi grants the user the ability to generate and control fire at will.
Ace's weakness here is not a devil fruit with the power of water, but Akainu's Magu Magu no Mi. The heat from the magma is even capable of extinguishing a fire. This is why Akainu's magma fist was able to pierce Ace's body, resulting in the latter's death.
14. His Power Inherited to Sabo
After Ace's death, the Mera Mera no Mi grew back somewhere and was found by Doflamingo. He used the devil fruit as a prize for the winner of the Corrida Colosseum tournament. At the end of the fight, it was Sabo who managed to get the one who inherited Ace's power. Ace surely wanted either Sabo or Luffy to have his powers.
15. An Important Character to Die in the Story
Eiichiro Oda is not someone who likes to kill his characters in One Piece. But, because of a suggestion from one of his editors, he decided to kill Ace and Shirohige.
