On October 31, 2021, there was a commotion at the Tokyo subway station, Japan. Someone dressed as The Joker stabbed 17 people and also tried to set a train on fire by pouring liquid that ignited the fire. What the person wearing the Joker costume did is a crime that should not be imitated, in Batman, Joker is the big enemy of Gotham city.
As an enemy of Batman who dresses up and wears costumes like a clown, The Joker is a popular character in pop culture. His crazy actions often overwhelmed Batman. Do you want to know more about Joker? Here are the 15 facts about the Clown Prince of Crime!
1. A Character Inspired by the Joker Card
It's pretty convincing that The Joker is the alter ego of Jack Napier, a former villain and guinea pig for an unnatural method of applying chemicals. But it's even more interesting if we discuss how the idea of this mysterious character first appeared. The myth surrounding The Joker is that DC Comics creator Jerry Robinson was inspired by the joker card while playing cards in his apartment.
2. Joker’s Unclear Origin
Although the exact origins of The Joker are never explained, the most widely accepted origin theory comes from Alan Moore's semi-canon comic book The Killing Joke. A mastermind of criminal events named "The Red Hood" meets Batman at the ACE Chemicals facility. The Red Hood then plunged into a pool filled with a mixture of chemicals to escape. Apparently the chemical bleached his skin and drove him crazy. The story is a little different from the original story which explored Joker, where it was explained that the clown had been crazy from the start.
3. The Actors Who Got Immersed in The Joker Persona
It's an open Hollywood secret that in order to get into the role of The Joker, Heath Ledger lived alone in a hotel for a month and constantly wears Joker’s make-up. It is said that Heath Ledger got advice to explore the role from Jack Nicholson, the actor who played Joker before Heath Ledger.
This method has almost become a tradition because Jared Leto also tries the same approach, such as sending dead rat carcasses to the Suicide Squad players so that Jared Leto can be as crazy as The Joker. Warner Bros even hired a therapist during filming, presumably to make sure no one actually went crazy while playing the character. In the case of Joaquin Phoenix, the actor appears to have gone on an extreme diet and lost 23.5 kilograms of his body weight in order to immerse himself in the role of Joker.
4. Joker’s Real Name Might be Jack or Arthur
Officially, there are no clues as to what The Joker's real name is or who he really is. But one name that keeps popping up is Jack Napier. First coined as an alias for The Joker in the 1989’s Batman, the name has appeared several times in the Elseworlds series, Batman: White Knight. The 2019’s Joker explains that the person who becomes the clown is Arthur Fleck, although this is the first time the name appears as the Joker's alter ego.
5. Mark Hamill as Played as Joker
The Joker has been played by many actors namely Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero, Heath Ledger, and Joaquin Phoenix. But none have been as prolific as Mark Hamill, who has been one of the main voice actors for The Joker since demonstrating his prowess to play the clown in 1992's Batman: The Animated Series.
6. His Smile Was Inspired by a Silent Film
Where did The Joker get his smile from? While that's a debatable topic, what we do know is that The Joker's legendary smile was most likely inspired by Conrad Veidt's appearance in the 1928 black-and-white silent film The Man Who Laughs. The inspiration for The Joker might come from that film.
7. Joker Initially Created To be Easily Defeated
The Joker was not originally meant to be a permanent arch-enemy after his character was introduced in the 1940s. Actually, the DC Villain was originally planned as a one-shot character who would die early. But Mr. J was so popular that he escaped death and has been made stronger ever since.

8. His First Sidekick is Gaggy the Clown
The Joker's first sidekick way back in the 1940s was someone named Gagsworth A. Gagsworthy or nicknamed Gaggy the Clown. Gaggy the Clown was like Robin to Batman for The Joker. The reason The Joker pays attention to him is because of Gagsworth's frustration toward The Flying Graysons. However, Harley Quinn who is a beautiful and sexy woman seems to be a much more popular option than Gaggy the Clown.
9. He is Immune to Poison and Drugs
It's never been explained if his immunity was due to falling into a chemical pool or because of his crazy mind, but The Joker has some immunity to chemicals. Scarecrow's fear gas doesn't even work on The Joker. Red Skull's death dust has no effect on the Joker either. When the Joker injects himself with Titan in Arkham, he gets all the benefits of the poison with no side effects because Joker is insane.
10. Joker Once Saved America
It may sound crazy but there are times when The Joker actually did something good. One of his most famous acts was in the Batman & Captain America crossover in 1997 in which he teamed up with the Red Skull. The collaboration lasted until the end of the story when the Joker realized Red Skull was a Nazi from World War II. The Joker defected and challenged the Red Skull in a fight. The Joker may be a criminal madman but at least he's an "American criminal madman" who is definitely hostile to the Nazis.
11. Heath Ledger is Nolan’s First Choice
It's an unbelievable fact of the film, but during casting no one really thought Heath Ledger would be a good fit for The Joker. After all, he was a man of sweet character to women in most roles during his acting career.
Christopher Nolan, on the other hand, isn't sure about this. Nolan also chose Heath Ledger as the first choice for the role of Joker. After convincing Ledger, he finally took on the role that made him famous.
12. Joker is Actually Not Crazy, He is Sane
A wild idea from Grant Morrison in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth claimed that The Joker isn't actually crazy, maybe even the other way around. The idea he proposes is a sort of high-level psychopathic attitude in which The Joker is so sane that he no longer cares about anything in the real world.
Because the Joker is so sane, he tends to make complicated and difficult plans, impossible for a madman to do. He was too genius and cunning so he wanted to escape reality. Harley Quinn, who was previously a psychiatrist who was assigned to provide therapy to Joker, was influenced by Joker to become his sidekick.
13. He is Obsessed with Batman
The Joker is so obsessed with Batman that he feels Robin is his rival. He hates Dick Grayson, whom the Joker calls "Blunder Boy" until the Joker kills him because he is so obsessed with Batman. Despite the opportunity, the Joker never had the heart to kill Batman, who was considered his mortal enemy as well as his best friend.
14. Joker Killed Lex Luthor
Lex Luthor was killed by The Joker. To be precise, Alexander Luthor Junior from another universe. The Joker is a bit annoyed that he wasn't invited to the Secret Society of Super Villains when Alex disguised himself as Prime Lex. So when he and the real Lex run into Alex under the bridge, the Joker douses Alex in the face with acid, shocks him with a joy-buzzer, then blows his head off with a shotgun. At that time, the real Lex was only watching the Joker's heinous events.
15. There are Three Joker
The big question Batman asks when he has access to the Mobius Chair is “Who is the real identity of the Joker?” Instead of saying "Jack Napier" as we all imagine, the Mobius Chair tells him that there are three people who become The Joker. Could this answer be referring to The Jokers from The Killing Joke, his first appearance in the 1940s, and his appearance in the 1960s?
Or does that mean there are Gold (Jack Nicholson), Silver (Caesar Romero) and Bronze (Heath Ledger) variants of the Joker? In the Joker film it was hinted that The Joker is not just one person.
