Saying a video game is a dead game without even having played the game before isn’t a wise thing to do. However, the fact that there are so many big games that couldn’t maintain their popularity due to their limited updates or other issues leads to new players refuse to play the game as they have those doubts. And, online games basically rely on their players to keep them alive.

Although nowadays you can play online games on consoles and so many developers add the cross-platform feature to their games, the people who contributed to the success of these games began from the PC gamers community.

So, which online PC games still manage to avoid being a dead game? Here are 15 online PC games that are certainly not dead games. Before we delve deeper, please read the following disclaimer:

  • The games on this list aren’t the ones that are popular at the time of writing, such as Valheim (currently popular), PUBG, Counter-Strike, Dota 2, Valorant, etc. These games used to be popular yet have gradually fallen in terms of popularity
  • This list is ranked in no particular order.
  • No benchmark in terms of player counts, but online games with less than 2k players aren’t included on this list.
  • The data is taken from SteamDB, Twitch, stats from various websites, and communities.
  • Not including games with other launchers than Steam.
  • The validity of the data isn’t fixed as it ever changes.
  • This list can’t guarantee that these games still have high player counts as it depends on when you read this article. This article was written on March 1-2.

15. SCUM

This game used to be so popular during its initial launch. SCUM wasn’t branded as another battle royale game yet as a full survival with incredible realism. Players get sick, hungry, thirsty, and get overheated just like in real life. And of course, players can kill each other, which is the core of SCUM.

According to SteamDB, the game boasts a decent amount of players, around 8-10 thousand players every day with peak concurrent players of 68k players three years ago. Its viewership on Twitch isn’t impressive, as it only reaches 300k viewers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a dead game.

14. No Man’s Sky

From zero to hero, that’s what they call it. The space exploration game that used to be so popular due to the controversy, No Man’s Sky, managed to get to its peak after the free updates from Hellogames. Although there are still so many issues in terms of its content and other matters, it still has a good amount of players.

Around 8-11k players are still online daily. Unfortunately, its peak concurrent player, around 200k players, happened five years ago when the game was still freshly released on Steam. It only has around 400 viewers on Twitch.

13. Eternal Return: Black Survival

Out of the blue, is probably what best describes Eternal Return: Black Survival. This game is basically an anime battle royale game with a top-down camera that isn’t only centered around the classic “ring” concept, but with certain areas like Hyper Scape.

The game recorded 8-20k daily players and a peak concurrent players of 52k three months ago. The game is popular for a specific community and doesn’t really have a varied group of fans. But it manages to get a great number of viewers, around 7k viewers on Twitch, proving that Eternal Return: Black Survival remains a unique online game with a strong player base.

12. Dragon Nest SEA

The dungeon crawler game released in 2011 used to switched to regional from South Korea, Americas, Asia, Indonesia, and closed before opening new servers in other regions. The game manages to survive in Southeast Asia under Eyedentity Games.

We don’t have any specific data for Dragon Nest. But, the number of players in each game proves that it’s still popular for so many players. The communities reach various groups, Discord, and other forums.

11. Apex Legends

It came out of nowhere, with excellent gameplay and great servers, made Apex Legends one of the most anticipated games for many FPS players. Sure, the battle royale theme isn’t something new, but the hero-shooter with speed, traversal, and escape mechanics made the game so exciting to play. Despite the dark period, which made some Indonesian players call it a dead game, Apex Legends has actually never been within that category.

Since the collaboration between EA and Valve, this game also made it to Steam. According to SteamDB, the game has 120-180k players every day. With its 228k peak concurrent players several days ago. And it’s not including the players accessing the game using Origin.

The communities are still strong to this day. Especially with the launch of Season 8. Its Twitch viewership even reaches 100k viewers.

10. Black Desert Online

Black Desert is one of the games with the most unreliable data on SteamDB given that there are three games with the same titles with different regions. However, in total, Black Desert boasts 20-40k daily players. It’s not including those who bought the game via the official website.

While its peak concurrent viewers reach 60-80k players. The game also attracts a great number of people and forums, be it in Indonesia and other countries, including on Twitch. It has 11-12k viewers.

9. Destiny 2

While Bungie was considered a failure when it’s still under Activision, since both part ways, Destiny 2 now looks better, despite some minor flaws.

According to SteamDB, it has 40-80k daily players with peak concurrent players of 292,513. Its community is still solid, appearing on various groups and forums, with 14-15k viewers on Twitch.

8. Final Fantasy XIV

The buy-and-subscribe business model made Final Fantasy XIV one of the MMORPGs with the most dynamic player count. Especially with its launchers: Steam and its website. However, a lot of players are still playing this game.

According to SteamDB, 23-26k players are still playing it on Steam with 41k peak concurrent players just two years ago. Its communities are still active, talks about the game still take place in chat groups and forums. It even has 4k viewers on Twitch.

And, these figures don’t include players who bought the game and play it without using Steam. In fact, we don’t even include players on the console as Final Fantasy XIV is designed as a cross-platform game.

7. Among Us

A late bloomer, perhaps that’s what best describes Among Us. Although it used to be full of players, the communities have gone silent since, with fewer and fewer daily players. However, there are still a good number of active players.

It has 13-22k daily players with around 400k peak concurrent players. Among Us still attracts a lot of viewers on Twitch with around 4k viewers.

6. Warframe

Although it used to be outmatched by its many rival games within the same theme, it’s not enough to take Warframe down from getting its player base. It’s still one of the top free games with a good number of players.

According to SteamDB, 44-70k players are playing the game every day. While it’s not so popular on Twitch (with only less than 2k viewers due to its long, time-consuming grinds), it doesn’t mean that it’s a dead game. Many forums and groups will prove that there are still people who enjoy the universe created by Digital Extremes.

5. Guild Wars 2

With the lack of access to the data, it’s hard to know the number of players Guild Wars 2 has. Based on the various sources of data, the game actually has an impressive number of peak concurrent players.

There are around 100-200k players who still play Guild Wars 2 with around 600k active players. It has less than 1,000 viewers on Twitch.

4. Rising Force Online Indonesia

Having been rebranded on multiple occasions yet still popular, that’s RF Online Indonesia. Although there are many private servers, which suits better with the PvP approach, there are still players who love this game. We certainly didn’t manage to get the particular data for this game, but if we had to play it, the game still has so many players to this day. Especially if you’re an OG internet cafe patrons who enjoy its updates, like Red Army, etc.

LYTO now divided the game into two: Classic and Remastered. The latter being a rebranded version of the game with new updates while Classic has a level cap of 50. Remastered has three servers: Zero, Alpha, and Zigma, dominated by Cora and Bellato. While Classic only has 1 server, Niven, dominated by Accretia and Cora during the Chipwars.

3. Overwatch

Another game without SteamDB stats. Overwatch used to be hugely popular during its initial launch in 2015, but the decline in terms of its players has gone quite so long. Especially since the update was stopped as they’re focusing on the second installment of the franchise.

However, based on the data collected, the number of Overwatch players is actually quite high. It has 100-400k daily players. But this figure also includes every platform, not limited to PC. 10k players are a lot, what about 100k players? So, no, Overwatch isn’t a dead game yet, unless you pick DPS in every matchmaking, you will get a longer queue.

2. World of Tanks

World of Tanks (not the Blitz one) has become one of the games with a consistently high number of daily players. The vehicular combat game survives after a decade since its initial release by featuring numerous interesting updates.

While it’s not that attractive to most Indonesian players, the 200-300k of total players from every region proves that World of Tanks still has a lot of players. Not to mention that it has an update for its visuals.

The game is also popular on Twitch. Around 9,800 viewers watch these kinds of videos.

1. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Last but not least, we have a game that used to be so popular, it had its server overloaded. To put it simply, players are required to get through the various obstacles, much like the Japanese TV show: Takeshi’s Castle.

Although the number of players has been decreased ever since, its 7-10k daily players proof that the games are still exciting. Unfortunately, the 170k peak concurrent players will probably never be repeated. One of the reasons why is cheaters. Hey, how bad are you that you need to cheat in this kind of game?

It boasts a great number of viewers on Twitch, around 4k viewers, with a solid player base and communities.
