Playing war themed video games is always fun. Well, for those of you who still often play your PSP, PS Vita, or using the PPSPP emulator on your phone or laptop, here is a list of 20 modern war (aka post-World War II) games that must be included in your collection!

1. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

Continuing the story of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter on PS2, as the Ghost squad leader Scott Mitchell, you must fight alone to help the Mexican government against rebel groups in this August 2007 third-person shooter game. Unfortunately, unlike the console version, there is no AI partners that you can command and help you in battle.

2. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Predator

Responding to players' disappointment with the absence of AI partners in the previous game, in November 2010 Ubisoft released the third-person shooter game Ghost Recon Predator. Here you control a squad of three that you can choose from eight different characters with their own equipment. You can also switch characters during the game. Here Scott Mitchell and the Ghost squad are sent to Sri Lanka to confront a terrorist group called the People's Action Front.

3. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas

In this June 2007 first-person shooter game, you play members of the Rainbow Six anti-terrorist team, Brian Armstrong and Shawn Rivers, who are tasked with rescuing two other Rainbow Six members who were kidnapped near the United States-Mexico border. You will automatically switch viewpoints between Brian and Shawn during the game.

4. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo

As Navy SEALs member codename SANDMAN, you and your fellow AI named LONESTAR travel to Chile, Morocco, Southeast Asia, and Poland to fight terrorists, rebels, and pirates in this November 2005 third-person shooter game.

5. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2

Continuing SANDMAN’s adventure, in the following game released in June 2007 you can choose your partner; between LONESTAR the sniper, BRONCO with his heavy weapons, or WRAITH who specializes in close combat. You are invited to fight in the fictional Republic of Adjikistan. Depending on how you play, you can earn points to buy weapons or unlock special weapons.

6. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3

This time you control WRAITH in a four-man squad. You are tasked with pursuing and interrogating former KGB agent Vasyli Gozorov to the fictional country of Koratvia who is suspected of having information about a terror attack using weapons of mass destruction.

Interestingly, in this game there is a Custom Missions feature that allows you to set the level of difficulty as well as the number and type of enemies from the single player levels that you have completed.

7. SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike

Back to focus on firefighting while controlling a four-man squad, in this February 2010 launched game you can choose between controlling a team of Navy SEALs or elite squads from other countries such as the British SAS, French GIGN, even the 707th Battalion of South Korea. The story is about the rebel group La Mano los Gente who threatens the security of the Republic of Panama by detaining the Minister of the Interior of Panama and the Ambassador of the country you choose before starting the game.

8. SWAT Target Liberty

Taking place in New York City, USA, as a SWAT officer Kurt Wolfe you must stop the plans of a terrorist group that wants to detonate a nuclear bomb while putting the blame on North Korea. You control a three-person squad in this game using a top-down perspective and focus more on strategies to save hostages and neutralize enemies. This game was released in October 2007.

9. Army of Two The 40th Day

The PSP port of the game of the same name, here mercenaries Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem must survive the attack of a mysterious group that suddenly invades the city of Shanghai, China. Unfortunately the AI for friendlies and enemies feels so stupid that the game goes back and forth between being too easy or being annoying. It is recommended to play with friends via ad hoc if possible. This game launched in January 2010.

10. Ace Combat Joint Assault

If you are tired of regular shooter games, then you can try airplane games like Ace Combat. Similar to Assault Horizon on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, this August 2010 released title is set in the real world.

At the end of 2010 it was told that Japan was suddenly attacked by a mysterious organization. Private military contractor Martinez Security then teamed up with the US Navy and Japan's Self-Defense Forces to fight it. There are 44 fighter planes that you can unlock and modify.

11. Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Back to using the Strangereal world settings (a fictional world with real world technology), this October 2006 game tells the story of the conflict between the country of Aurelia against the invading country of Leasath during the Aurelian War. Besides being able to play 40 types of fighter planes, Ace Combat X also has a number of different endings.

12. After Burner: Black Falcon

In this on-rail arcade game adaptation that came out in March 2007 you face off against the terrorist organization Black Falcon who stole 13 prototype planes from the CIA. After Burner features 19 different aircraft including the F-14D Tomcat, F-22 Raptor, and F-15E Strike Eagle that you can modify.

13. Metal Gear Acid

The first Metal Gear game for the PSP hit the market in March 2005. Acid's gameplay is quite unique because it uses a turn-based tactics and trading cards system to control characters.

The story itself begins when Senator Hach is held hostage by terrorists who ask the US government to give them Pythagoras, a secret research project being carried out by the Moloni Republic in South Africa. The US government then assigned Solid Snake to infiltrate the Pythagorean laboratory and also save Senator Hach.

14. Metal Gear Acid 2

Still using the same card system but with cartoon-style cel-shaded graphics, this time Snake has amnesia and is forced by FBI agent Dalton to investigate the operations of weapons manufacturer SaintLogic. Acid 2 was released in March 2006.

15. Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops

If you want to play Metal Gear games with more traditional stealth action gameplay, then one of the choices is Portable Ops, published in December 2006. Set six years after MGS 3 in 1970, Naked Snake is captured by the rebel FOX Unit led by Gene in Colombia. Snake then has to build a new team along with Roy Campbell to fight Gene.

Before carrying out the mission, you must choose four characters with their respective advantages and disadvantages. Then you can recruit opposing troops to join your team. Team-building and multiplayer features were expanded in the Portable Ops Plus expansion, which removed the story mode.

16. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker

You could say it's a sequel to Portable Ops (although Hideo Kojima himself doesn't 100% acknowledge the events of the Portable Ops story). Even so, the June 2010 released game features similar gameplay, including recruiting prisoners and enemies to become members of the Militaires Sans Frontières organization.

Peace Walker itself takes place 10 years after the events of MGS 3. After Big Boss and Kazuhira Miller founded Militaires Sans Frontières they were hired by the Costa Rican government to help deal with a dangerous paramilitary group because Costa Rica could not create its own armed forces.

17. Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Another modern war-themed stealth series that you can play on PSP, made by Sony's Bend Studio. The Agency's member organization Gabe Logan was re-assigned to fight the terrorist group al-Jamil and its leader, Ghassan al-Bitar, who had previously escaped from Gabe's hands, after they attacked the warship USS Mt. St. Helens. The PSP version of Logan's Shadow was released in October 2007, ahead of the PS2 version.

18. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

A sequel to the PS2 game Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain, as agents Gabe Logan and Lian Xing you must face and investigate the mystery behind the attack of a terrorist group called the Red Section. This game was published in March 2006.

19. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Essentials

Another stealth title, published by Ubisoft in March 2006. The game opens in 2009, one year after the events of Double Agent. Sam Fisher sneaks into the Elysian Fields Graveyard to visit his daughter's grave, but he is caught. Fisher is then interrogated as to why he defected from the Third Echelon and killed Colonel Irving Lambert. We then unravel the mystery through a flashback told by Fisher.

20. Tom Clancy's EndWar

This strategy game that’s similar to Advance Wars, which came out in November 2008, tells the story of the World War III between the European Federation Enforcer Corps, the Russian Federation Spetsnaz Guards Brigade, and the United States Joint Strike Force.
