Alter Ego had officially secured their place as one of Indonesia’s representatives at the M7 World Championship. Although they failed to claim the MPL ID Season 16 title after being defeated by ONIC Esports in the grand final, the achievement still deserved celebration. Their playoff journey had been heroic—eliminating NAVI and EVOS Esports in impressive fashion. However, the 4-1 loss to ONIC opened many eyes, including head coach Xepher’s, to several weaknesses that must be addressed before they step onto the world stage.
The loss had not come without reason. ONIC looked more prepared in terms of macro play and rotations, while Alter Ego appeared to lose direction in games two through five. Many had hoped that the team’s momentum from playoffs would carry them all the way to the championship, but in reality, ONIC once again proved why they remained the kings of MPL Indonesia.
This moment had become a valuable reflection for Alter Ego. Xepher stated that his team would learn from the defeat and work on fixing every flaw before M7. He emphasized that even though the team was not yet perfect, Alter Ego had shown a champion’s mentality by reaching the grand final after such a long absence from the big stage.
Before M7, the team would need to ensure that every aspect—both gameplay and player connection—could synchronize perfectly. At the world-class level, even the smallest mistake could prove costly. Xepher openly discussed what he believed were the three main problems that Alter Ego had faced throughout MPL ID Season 16.
3 Problems Alter Ego Revealed by Xepher
Xepher candidly revealed three key issues within Alter Ego during his post-grand final livestream:
“In my opinion, what we lack are mechanics, connection, and preparation. Don’t criticize my players, guys. They’ve already been amazing to make it this far,” said Xepher proudly yet thoughtfully.
Below are the three major problems Xepher mentioned, and why they are crucial for Alter Ego to fix before M7.
1. Lacking in Mechanics
The first problem Alter Ego faced, according to Xepher, was individual mechanics. Several players often struggled with consistency during micro play—such as positioning in team fights, timing of key skills, and rotational efficiency. In games two and three against ONIC, a few small mistakes in the early game had caused them to lose momentum.
Xepher admitted that his players had given their best effort. However, mechanical consistency still needed refinement—especially since at M7, they would face world-class opponents like Blacklist International and Falcon Esports.
2. Lacking in Team Connection
The next issue was team connection. Not in terms of internet, but coordination and chemistry in making in-game decisions. Xepher explained that sometimes his team performed like a perfectly tuned machine, while other times they completely lost synchronization.
“We’re an unpredictable team. Sometimes we play insanely well, sometimes we play like trash, sometimes just bad. Even if we win, I can’t sit still behind the stage. Sometimes our passiveness disappears, sometimes it comes back again—it gives me a headache,” said Xepher with a laugh.
His words reflected Alter Ego’s great potential, though hindered by inconsistency in communication. For M7, building stronger coordination must become a top priority to ensure stability throughout each series.
3. Lacking in Preparation
The final issue Alter Ego had to face was preparation. At times, their strategies seemed less mature compared to their opponents. Jungle rotations and draft decisions sometimes failed to anticipate enemy patterns. Xepher admitted that their preparation time before playoffs had been short, as the team had focused more on solidifying roster cohesion.
Heading into M7, Xepher promised that they would prepare more thoroughly. Scrimming against international teams and reviewing MPL ID replays would be key priorities to eliminate any remaining weaknesses.
Despite the shortcomings, Xepher expressed gratitude for the team’s overall performance. “We didn’t win the title, but qualifying for M7 is already incredible. Many people didn’t believe we could make it this far,” he said, showing pride in his players’ determination through a highly competitive season.
M7 would serve as the ultimate proving ground for Alter Ego. If they could overcome these three main problems—mechanics, connection, and preparation—the opportunity to go far remained wide open. Fans hoped that Alter Ego could bring new energy and identity for Indonesia on the global stage.
With relentless spirit and an unpredictable playstyle, Alter Ego had the potential to become M7’s dark horse. All eyes were now on Xepher and his players—could they turn weaknesses into strength and make M7 their stage of redemption?
One thing was clear: Alter Ego’s problems had now been identified. It was only a matter of how the team would learn and grow from experience. In the world of MLBB competition, every defeat served as a valuable lesson toward becoming stronger.
And as Xepher said, Alter Ego’s journey was far from over—this was only the beginning of something greater. With the same determination, Alter Ego’s problems would no longer be seen as weaknesses, but as the stepping stones toward glory at M7.
