In One Piece, reputations make a pirate remembered. Pirates with high reputations can be recruited into Shichibukai by the World Government and will be feared by fellow pirates as well. Mihawk was probably a pirate who once served as a Shichibukai, but Shank’s reputation is still higher than his. Here are the reasons for it!

1. His Title as a Yonkou

Shanks once served as a crew member of Gol D. Roger Pirates. After Roger’s execution, he sailed and created his own. Six years before the beginning of One Piece, finally, Shanks became one of the Yonkou. This means that he received status as one of the strongest pirates among Shirohige, Kaido, and Big Mom.

Even though he’s a strong fighter, Mihawk is not a Yonkou, but instead a Shichibukai that is often called “the government’s dog”. This is why Shank’s reputation is still bigger than his.

2. Fighting Against the Strongest

Fighting against the “strongest” will increase the pirate’s notoriety. For years, Shanks already fought many strong pirates. One of the strongest pirates he ever fought was Shirohige, and the battle ended up in a tie.

Even though Mihawk dubbed as the strongest swordsman in the world, he never fought any of the Yonkou, so it’s understandable if his reputation is not skyrocketing like Shanks’. Some pirates may be more afraid of Shanks rather than to Mihawk.

3. Haoshoku Haki

Shanks becomes one of the few pirates who have Haoshoku Haki and it's seen in the anime. He used this ability to get rid of the sea monster that was trying to eat Luffy at East Blue. After that, he showed his ability at the Shirohige’s ship, making one by one Shirohige’s crew fell unconscious.

It never stated that Mihawk possesses a Haoshoku Haki. This makes Shanks have more potential to become a king compared to Mihawk and affects the reputation he gets.

4. Has Big Influence

Shanks is the captain of Red Hair Pirates. He is also one of the best leaders in the story. Even some of his crew are one of the most feared men according to the Admirals. At Marineford, Kizaru stopped when he pointed with a gun by Shanks’ right-hand man, Benn Beckman. This shows how terrifying Benn is, and who also gives an influence to Shanks.

On the other hand, Mihawk doesn’t have any crew. He doesn’t have any conquered territory outside his base. Because he works alone, Mihawk’s reputation is not as big as Shanks’.

5. Accelerated Growth

Shanks and Mihawk fought a few times in the past. It is rumored that their fights echoed throughout the world and reached the New World. It’s not stated who’s the victor of their battles, but it could be said that Shanks was not at this prime.

When saving Luffy, Shanks already a Yonkou. This is not luck, but it’s a massive accelerated growth. His strength may be already surpassing Mihawk’s. Shanks became a Yonko at 33 years old. If the two meet again in a fight, Shanks will probably triumph.
