5 Facts About Platinum End, a ‘Battle Royale’ Anime Series from the Death Note Mangaka

This month, we have an exciting new anime, Platinum End, from the creator of Death Note; Tsugumi Ohba is the writer, and Takeshi Obata is the illustrator. The series was initially published on Shueisha’s Jump Square, and the anime adaptation is coming out this month.

In case you haven’t heard, this anime follows Mirai Kakehashi, a student who attempts suicide due to the trauma of the abusive relationship he has with his relatives. When he’s about to kill himself, Mirai is saved by Nasse, a guardian angel, who tells him that God is about to step down, and Mirai is one of the candidates to take over the role.

As one of the candidates who will take over the role, he has to compete against the other candidates in a last-man-standing battle within 999 days to obtain the power.

There are some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about Platinum End. What are those facts? Without further ado, let’s get into it!

1. Created by the Legendary Duo, Tsugumi Ohba-Takeshi Obata

Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata have achieved huge success with some of their manga series -- which include Bakuman and Death Note. You will find it easy to transition to Platinum End given Takeshi Obata’s signature art style, and the grim storyline reminiscence of Death Note.

It may sound that this anime has a profound theme, yet the plot is quite simple and light, unlike Death Note.

2. The Manga was First Released in 2015

The manga was first released on Shueisha’s Jump Square with the first chapter appeared in the December 2015 issue, released on November 4, 2015, to January 4, 2021. Later on, Viz Media licensed the manga and digitally released the chapters in English on the same day of the Japan release.

3. Battle Royale

Recently, anime or movies with battle royale themes have been gaining lots of attention, especially after the release of Squid Game several weeks ago.  From the synopsis mentioned above, you may already have guessed that Platinum End has some battle royale elements given that the candidates have to eliminate each other to obtain the power.
