Exorcism is one of the most popular themes in the movie industry with a massive and dedicated fanbase loving this horror sub-genre.

However, not every movie is equally impressive, spooky and unsettling as there are a lot of exorcism movies that really aren’t there on the top. On the flipside, there are also exorcism movies that edge out the competition and rise up to become the best and most unsettling movies of its sub-genre. What are those movies? Here are five of the best and recommended exorcism movies for you to spend your free time:

1. The Conjuring Franchise

The Conjuring franchise has a lot of quality exorcism movies you can enjoy in this modern horror era thanks to their engaging and unsettling storytelling along with the brilliant performance by the main casts Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

Not only does it pack some very terrifying jumpscares right from the get-go but both the first and second The Conjuring movies have some subtle connections to one another.

Additionally, the franchise always delivers some fulfilling climaxes and conclusions  that answer a lot of things that the audiences are confused about by the end of the movies.

2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

The Exorcism of Emily Rose truly is a terrifying movie about Emily Rose who experiences bizarre and unsettling events with one of the causes being an evil spirit who haunts her, and this is even more terrifying when considering the movie’s based on true events.

Throughout the movie, there are a lot of unsettling and horrifying things that give it some memorable horror experiences especially with its “Based on true events” premise which adds realness to the horror element.

Another thing, the movie packs some seriously amazing visuals that make the horror sensation even more jaw-dropping.

3. The Exorcist

Commonly referred as the first movie in the exorcism genre, The Exorcist is a groundbreaking movie in the entire movie industry which came out in 1973 and inspires many exorcism movies released after it.

Interestingly, The Exorcist which tells the story of a mother who experiences bizarre events after her daughter does unsettling things is rumored to be based on true events, and the crews and casts filming the movie also experienced supernatural events at the filming scene.

For a movie that came out in 1973, The Exorcist has some pretty solid special effects through some horrifying scenes like Regan vomiting bullets, walking in reverse and turning her head 180 degree, creepy isn’t it?

4. The Last Exorcism

Imagine a budget movie that only spends US$1.8 million (IDR25 billion) to produce and becomes a highly successful movie that grossed $67.7 million (IDR965 billion), that perfectly sums up The Last Exorcism.

Using a found footage technique, The Last Exorcism is truly a horrifying and disturbing movie about Cotton Marcus who’s about to perform a demon exorcism in a story that keeps intensifying its horror elements while maintaining unpredictable plots all the way to the end, no wonder the audiences consistently get engaged in the movie.

5. Keeper of Darkness

In 2015, a horror movie directed and played by the award-winning Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung called Keeper of Darkness came out, achieved number one spot in Hong Kong’s box office for two weeks and received nominations for six Hong Kong movie awards.

That really speaks volume about the quality of Keeper of Darkness, which depicts the tale of Fatt, an ordinary citizen who happens to be able to talk with the spirits and convince them to leave whoever they possess simply by talking to them.

Unlike a lot of exorcism movies, Keeper of Darkness is entertaining and engaging due to Fatt being a very unique character who has a unique way of exorcising the spirits, along with some amusing humor the movie throws on occasion.
