Hikikomori is the term used for people who seclude themselves to avoid social interaction with others. They usually rely on family members financially or on their limited income for their daily needs. There are several hikikomori anime characters that you may find relatable.
So, who are these anime characters who spend their time just in their rooms? Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1. Sato Tatsuhiro, NHK Ni Youkoso
Sato Tatsuhiro, who dropped out of college, became paranoid and believes in a lot of world conspiracy theories. The biggest conspiracy he found actually involves his hikikomori status. Tatsuhiro believes that an organization called Nihon Hikikomori Kyoukai (NHK) is trying to spread the hikikomori culture, which has become his lifestyle.
Tatsuhiro is perhaps the most common example of a hikikomori practitioner-- leaving their education to seclude themself in their apartment. His strong belief in conspiracy theories makes it more difficult to interact with society as he develops a scary image of the world outside.
2. Yadomi Jinta, Anohana
Yadomi Jinta is another hikikomori anime character who isolates himself to an extreme extend. Jintan spends most of his days playing video games and skips school. His lifestyle began after the death of one of his friends, which led to his psychological problems.
3. Ryuunosuke Akasaka, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
At Suimei High School, Sakura Hall (Sakurasou) has become infamous for its eccentric residents. Ryuunosuke is one of the residents of the dorm, a shy programmer who rarely leaves his room. Ryuunosuke has a strong interest in computers and prefers to communicate with others through instant messages or email, and especially his own program.
Thanks to the other residents of Sakurasou, Ryuunosuke gradually starts to adapt to the presence of other people -- although he often relapses his old habits as a hikikomori.

4. Sagiri Izumi, Eromanga Sensei
Sagiri Izumi and Masamune Izumi became step-siblings about a year ago, but then their parents died suddenly, leaving them on their own. Since then, Sagiri started to seclude herself from everyone else, including Masamune and locked herself in her room. To support himself and his step-sister, Masamune takes a job as a light novel author.
To his own surprise, he later finds out that Sagiri has been working as his illustrator, under a pseudonym: Eromanga-sensei! Both must work together to take over the light novel industry.
Sagiri spends her time illustrating her step-brother’s light novel and starts to gain online popularity for her works. She doesn’t seem to get along with most people, but she can be possessive towards Masamune.
5. Izumi Takanashi, Working!!!
Izumi Takanashi is Souta’s second eldest sister who writes romance novels for a living. The rest of her family has been attending to her due to her weak physical condition. Thus, Izumi tends to stay in her room for long periods of time. She pays little attention to her appearance and often gets herself covered with ink.
