Japan Sinks 2020 is one of the most recent anime series on Netflix released on July 9, adapted from the best-selling sci-fi novel by Sayko Komatsu, animated by Science Saru, and directed by Pyeon-Gang Ho and Masaaki Yuasa.

Japan Sinks 2020 tells the story of the people try to survive in the sinking Japanese archipelago after a major earthquake hits Japan. Ayumu Moto, one of the survivors, has to find her younger brother who’s missing amid the whole catastrophic situation.

4. Aggretsuko

Aggretsuko or Aggressive Retsuko (original Japanese title) is an anime that combines comedy and musical. Aggretsuko follows Retsuko, a red panda who gets frustrated of her work. To cope with that, she visits karaoke places after work and sang numerous metal songs.

Aggretsuko was first released on Netflix in April 2018, with the second season released in June 2019. Currently, Aggretsuko has entered its third season, which was released on August 2020.

3. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Reawakened

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., also known as Saiki Kusuo No Psi-nan in Japan, is a comedy manga series written by Shuichi Aso. The anime series was first aired from July 4, 2016 to December 28, 2018. After making a TV appearance, Netflix tried to make the sequel titled The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Reawakened which premiered on December 30, 2019.

In this story, Saiki Kusuo is a high school student who has psychokinesis powers. While he wants to live his life normally, his classmates keep on bothering him. Due to the problems caused by his classmates, he has to use his powers.

2. Forest of Piano

Forest of Piano is a manga by Makoto Isshiki, published from August 5, 1998 to November 2015. The Netflix series was first released in September 2018 and is currently in its second season.

The anime tells the story of Kai Ichinose, a boy who lives on the edges of the town who sneaks up to the forest to play the piano. Kai goes to school (though he’s mostly absent from school) and meets his music teacher, Ajino Sousuke, who isn’t particularly good with kids.

Long story short, Kai then meets Shuhei Amamiya, the son of a famed pianist, Yuichiro Amamiya. They go to the forest to play the piano. Seeing Kai’s extraordinary performance, Shuhei is impressed -- especially when he finds out that Kai is a self-taught pianist.

Hearing rumors about a piano in the forrest, Ajino goes out to find it for himself. Right there, he sees Kai playing the piano and tries to help his student to refine his techniques -- to be better than him at that age.

1. The Great Pretender

Last but not least, we have The Great Pretender. This anime follows the life of a young man, Makoto Edamura, who’s a pretty good con  artist in modern day Japan. While he considers himself as the best con artist, Makoto finds himself deceived by a French man, Laurent Thierry.

Mad that he’s just got tricked, Makoto follows Laurent to Los Angeles to con the cartels and the mafias there.
