Ninja is the military force of the hidden ninja village. Those who decide to become a ninja becomes a part of the military force of their village.

By joining the force, they are required to complete missions given by the village; from these missions, the mission giver will pay the village and becomes the main financial income for the village.

Besides the missions, the ninja also has other tasks such as peace-keeping, training new ninja in the Academy, and others.

Every task and mission is separated by the ninja’s tier. Through various tests and battle experiences, a ninja can raise their tier. Let’s take a look at the tier list a ninja gets.

Academy Student

They are candidates that are still studying and adapting to the ninja lifestyle in the Academy. Because they are still learning the basics, they are not considered as a part of a village’s military force.

But when push comes to shove, the students can be recruited to join the forces.

A student in the Academy wears no uniform and headband.

Genin

Genin is the lowest tier for a ninja that is earned after graduating from the Academy.

To reach this tier, a ninja is required to take part in a mission, in a small team of three with 3 Genenin and 1 Chuunin/Jounin. Normally Genin takes part in hard labor missions with D ranking. But sometimes they may also take part in C ranking missions that are more dangerous.

A ninja officially becomes a Genin when they earn a headband. But they can wear the headband on their shoulder or as a necklace, as long as the village’s symbol is visible.

Chunin

A ninja that reaches the Chunin tier is considered mature and can lead other ninjas to complete a mission. Genin can become a Chunin by participating in the Chunin exam.

A Chunin is usually tasked with C or B Ranked missions.

Several Chunin has the responsibility to lead a team like Shikamaru. While others may choose to settle as a teacher like Iruka and Shino Aburame.

Several Chunin wears a gray uniform when they are watching over the Chunin Exam, some may wear a green jacket with a blue long-sleeved undershirt, and some may choose to wear casual clothing.

Tokubetsu Jonin

Tokubetsu Jonin is a special class Jonin. Unlike regular Jonin that is an elite and expert at managing every battle, Tokubetsu Jonin is an expert at a specific field such as:

• Ibiki Morino: an expert in the human mind and interrogation
• Ebisu: an expert in elite ninja’s private training

In a mission, Tokubetsu Jonin operates under Jonin.

Tokubetsu Jonin has no special uniform.

Jonin

The highest level a regular ninja can get. Only they experienced ninja can reach Jonin and they are the leader of a troop.

They can at least use two chakra release, use and disable genjutsu, and has taijutsu skills above the average. A Jonin often partakes in A or S Ranked missions alone.

Most Jonin wears a complete set of uniform consisting of a green jacket, blue long-sleeved undershirt, and blue pants. But some often doesn’t wear the complete uniform or wear something that’s more suitable for combat. 

Besides Genin, Chunin, and Jonin, there are other ninjas with a special titled.

• Head Ninja: A special rank in Kumogakure. A level below Raikage, a Head Ninja helped lead the army acts as the Kumogakure’s representative in the place of the Raikage.
• Jonin Commander: The leader of the army and Jonin in Konohagakure that is selected from the best Jonins. Represents the army during meetings with the leaders.

This ninja tier doesn’t reflect the strength of a ninja. The most obvious example is Naruto and Sasuke that never make the Jonin tier, yet they are the strongest ninja in history.

The same thing applies to Might Duy and Kosuke Maroboshi, the two “Eternal Genin” respectively master the Eight Gate technique or has equal strength to a Jonin.
