Bad endings often appear as a kind of punishment for players who do not fulfill the obligations of the game. Usually, any ending where the characters succeed in their quest or some kind of happy event, it will be the real ending. 2. Shadow Hearts

At the end of the game, James O'Flaherty sacrifices himself to purify Elaine's body, causing the Monastery to burn down. Edward and Koudelka eventually had a child, but they separated before either of them knew it. It's unsatisfactory, but serves as a pretty strong cliffhanger for the upcoming sequel.

1. X-COM

In this game players must return to their carrier during the final mission. If they could return in time, they would be able to defeat the invaders. Otherwise, the aliens destroy it, and players are treated to tons of exciting explosions that they almost manage to dodge. However, there is a worse and more vicious ending. If the player fails to completely defeat the aliens, the Interceptor appears and shoots the earth with this huge green laser, turning it into a barren wasteland.
