1. Has a Long Rivalry With Kenshin

Saito is a former captain of the Shinsengumi Third Squad. In the Rurouni Kenshin anime, Saito serves as a special agent for the Meiji Government's Ministry of Home Affairs.

It is also told that Saito was someone who dared to target Kenshin when he was still active as a manslayer. Eventually, Saito's bravery made him have a rivalry with Kenshin.

Even though Kenshin had stopped being a manslayer, Saito still targeting him until they fought at the Kamiya Dojo, even though Saito was not ordered to fight Kenshin when he came to the dojo. Their conflict ended after the Shishio Crisis is over.

2. His Birthday

Hajime Saito's birthday is February 18th. This date is based on Hajime Saito's birthday in real life. You already know that Rurouni Kenshin is not the only series that has Hajima Saito as their character. Several other mangas that highlight the Shinsengumi, also feature Saito as one of the characters.

Since all of these Saitos are based on real-life ones, both incarnations share the same birthday, February 18th.

3. The Gatotsu Technique is Fiction

As a great character, Saito had an incredible and strong sword technique. His technique is called Gatotsu which allows Saito to move quickly and breakthrough everything in front of him.

Is Gatotsu real? It's a fictional technique, but it’s based on the real-life ones, namely the Hirazuki technique, which is famous for being developed by Hijikata Toshizo, the vice commander of the Shinsengumi.

The description of the technique is said to be similar to the one Hajime Saito used. Although Gatotsu is fictional, the way Saito uses it in the anime is creatively altered to be more fantastic.

4. Saito's Wife

The next fact that Hajime Saito's fans rarely know is that it turns out that he has a wife named Tokio. In the Rurouni Kenshin series, Tokio is only mentioned without ever being shown.

But did you know that Tokio Takagi is the wife of the real Hajime Saito’s wife as well? In the real world, Saito married Tokio in 1874.

5. From Shinsengumi to Become a Policeman in the Meiji Restoration Era

In the Rurouni Kenshin manga, Hajime Saito is a policeman under the alias, Goro Fujita. This is not just Nobuhiro Watsuki's creativity, because the real Hajime Saito also used the name Goro Fujita and became a policeman during the Meiji Restoration era, after previously being a member of the Shinsengumi.

6. Gatotsu, a Technique with Four Stances

There are three stances that Saito can use with Gatotsu; Ishiki, the standard shoulder-level stance, Nishiki, an attack to the lower area, and Sanshiki, an attack to the upper area.

Apart from the three Gatotsu stances, Saito has another Gatotsu variant, namely the Gatotsu Zeroshiki, which allows Saito to do Gatotsu at very close range. This is what Saito used to kill Usui. Even Usui's shield was shattered by it.
