Squid Game has a premise that is quite popular among Koreans. What if their favorite childhood game was played at the risk of their death and financial security as a reward? From there, this series builds on an engaging and enigmatic plot filled with diversely personified characters.
All the contestants of the deadly game have one thing in common: they are either in debt. Thanks to these circumstances, this series also doubles as a socio-political satire that should be familiar to anyone who has watched the film Parasite.

Based on the award-winning book by author Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games is a story about a political dystopia in which a country is divided into districts each representing a social caste. In order to distract everyone from such an unfair system, the country's highest authority holds an annual survival game called the Hunger Games. There, the teens compete against each other in a brutal last-man-standing contest.
The story is centered on Katniss Everdeen, a hopeful and rebellious girl from the poorest district. Together with Peeta Mellark, they must win the Hunger Games while also raising their district flag and indoctrinating themselves into a secret revolutionary faction.
3. Battle Royale (2000)
One of Suzanne Collins' inspirations for Hunger Games is Battle Royale, which tells the story of a Japanese survival game. This is a film where a group of 9th grade delinquent students who skipped class together are suddenly sent to a deserted island by their own teacher. The 42 students must kill each other where the only winner is the one who last survives and can go home.
The weapons given to kill each other are very random, ranging from Crossbows, Pistols, SMGs to pot lids. Battle Royale became the inspiration for many video games with the genre taken from the name of this film. Free Fire and PUBG Mobile are games inspired by this movie as well.
