After pushing the release date of Ubisoft’s upcoming Far Cry 6 game to October 7 2021, the series has become a hot topic among the gaming communities again. Since its inception in 2004, fans have been looking forward to every new title under the Far Cry series with their famous Far Cry Villains.
What sets the series apart from the other game series is that the protagonists aren’t the only stars of the show. Far from it in fact, this Ubisoft’s flagship series is more known for its numerous iconic psychopaths and antagonists that enrich the lore in every Far Cry game. Not to mention, the series also has exciting gameplay and has become the pioneer for the open-world games where the players must survive and conquer an area or building.
But speaking of the villains, who are the most popular Far Cry villains that always steal the show? Well, here are six of them:
1. Vaas Montenegro
Despite being the most popular villain among another Far Cry Villains, in Far Cry 3, Vaas is in fact just the henchmen of the main antagonist, yet he has deeper charm and impact toward the game more than the main antagonist and even the protagonist. This shows Ubisoft’s brilliance in creating iconic characters as Vaas frequently appears as the villain of the show in Far Cry 3.
However, for all the praises he got, it’s a shame that he’s only a henchman in Far Cry 3, even though he has all the recipes needed to become an impactful antagonist. He is ruthless, merciless, and loves playing with his victims before killing them.
All of these make him very entertaining to watch, even more so than watching the protagonist’s actions. As if being a dangerous psychopath alone isn’t enough, he’s also very unpredictable as seen from the first time he lets the protagonist go when running away from the prison. In fact, Vaas tells the protagonist to run away as fast as possible while shooting him to instill fear and emotional torture.
Another memorable scene of Vaas is when the protagonist is captured. Instead of shooting him in the head, Vaas ties up the protagonist and shoves him to the water so that he can die a slow and painful death.
The moment Far Cry 3 came out, the internet was on the rage for Vaas. This supportive cast really solidifies the popularity of the main character, and some even argue that Vaas is still the most heinous villain in the Far Cry series.
2. Joseph Seed
Just like his role as a fake prophet, Joseph Seed is a popular villain from Far Cry 5. After the players are surprised by Vaas Montenegro in Far Cry 3, they become shocked to see a religious figure who’s not only a psycho but also very charismatic. However, unlike Vaas whose real role is just being a henchman, Joseph Seed is known as the savior of the armageddon that many people worship.
As a leader, Joseph has a strong influence and terrifying personality behind his laid-back facade, so much that people around him are also scared of him. Yet, the most terrifying thing about him is that his prophecy about the eventual armageddon turns out to be true.
You can also see Joseph one more time in the spin-off Far Cry: New Dawn as he ages and becomes wiser.
3. Pagan Min
Some believe Pagan Min is the most iconic villain in the Far Cry series between another Far Cry Villains. Depicted as a cold-blooded and ruthless dictator, he is the main antagonist of Far Cry 4 who surprisingly has charismatic and interesting image surrounding him
This stylish metrosexual man considers himself the King of Kyrat (the setting of the game) who was born in Hong Kong as the son of a middle-class narcotics dealer around the Golden Triangle. After the death of his father, Pagan inherited a handful of his father’s wealth and then threw away his old identity to have the name of an old king from Burma.
Pagan Min quickly solidified his presence by amassing a huge amount of assets, building a private army and angering his heroine business’ allies. Pagan formed an alliance with the Royalists, a group of people who considered themselves the successor of the kingdom and helped them defeat every opposing faction in Kyrat country.
Months after the conflict, Pagan and the Royalists managed to occupy the castle during a large-scale assault. But by then, Pagan betrayed the Royalists by taking down the rightful heir and taking the throne for himself.
As the figure who’s worshipped as King Min, he can swiftly clean up any mess who doesn’t follow his own ways. Pagan’s betrayal eventually gives birth to Golden Path, a small-scale rebellion whose purpose is to overthrow Pagan’s supremacy.

4. Citra
As one of the best-selling Far Cry games, Far Cry 3 is a survival open world game with a tropical island setting that is similar to Indonesia. Here, you must survive in the wilderness throughout the entire game and will eventually meet Citra, a female character that helps you to survive.
Citra slowly finds her way to you by alluring you with her charm and charisma, all while demanding you to slaughter the protagonist’s girlfriend and friends.
Though by the end of the story, you’ll eventually sympathize with Citra. Behind her ruthless acts, Citra only wishes to have a child from the protagonist who would become a tough fighter. On the flipside, if you comply with her wish to have a child with Citra, she will kill you the moment she’s pregnant.
5. Anton Castillo
Despite being a new villain for the upcoming Far Cry 6 which hasn’t even been released yet, Anton Castillo quickly garners popularity as an amusing dictator of Yara nation. Depicted as a tropical paradise in Latin America with a similar background to Cuba, the players will participate in a rebellion to overthrow Anton Castillo’s dictatorship in the Island Nation of Yara.
To overthrow him, you will have to destroy Anton’s plan to pass down his rulership to his son, Diego.
6. Mickey and Lou
Far Cry: New Dawn is a spin-off to the series, telling the story of Carmine Rye, an offspring of the protagonist from Far Cry 5 who’s attempting to seek help. 17 years after the nuclear strike, Hope County is now invaded by a group of bandits called The Highwaymen led by Far Cry Villains Mickey and Lou.
The protagonist is a key character from a group of troops who has managed to survive from the nuclear strike by the end of Far Cry 5. Unfortunately, the group is under attack by The Highwaymen and the protagonist is entrusted by the people of Hope County to lead the resistance against the bandits.
The Highwaymen is led by Far Cry Villains called Mickey and Lou, a pair of ruthless people and the villains of this game who fill in each other’s shoes in terms of their brutality toward their opponents in this purple-infested world.
These six popular Far Cry villains are really the highlights of this series. Among these people, which one do you think is the most ruthless one?
