There are so many kinds of stories that are made into anime series. And, there are several anime series with similar plots to soap operas as they feature cheap drama and romance. Of the many anime series that have been released, on this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of seven anime series with soap opera elements.
So, what are the series we’re going to cover on this list? Without further ado, let’s get into it!
1. Domestic na Kanojo
- Genre: Drama, Romance, School, Shounen.
Starting at number one, we have Domestic na Kanojo, a drama anime with complicated romance similar to Indonesian soap operas. Follows the story of a high school student named Natsuo, who has feelings towards a popular teacher at his school named Hina.
Then, Natsuo meets a shy girl in his class called Rui -- unexpectedly, Rui immediately invites Natsuo to spend the night at her house. One day, Natsuo’s father says that he wants to remarry. And as it turns out, Natsuo’s soon-to-be stepmother is Hina, Rui’s mother.
Looking at the plot we’ve mentioned above, perhaps you’re already confused by the love triangle between Natsuo, Rui, and Hina. Plus, this anime series also features forbidden love, which is a familiar topic in numerous soap operas in Indonesia.
2. Hachimitsu to Clover
- Genre: Comedy, Drama, Josei, Romance, Slice of Life.
Next up, is Hachimitsu to Clover, better known as Honey and Clover. This anime series has a similar plot to soap operas/TV movies in Indonesia, focuses on college stories.
This series follows the story of Yuuta Takemoto, a sophomore at an arts college who shares a cheap apartment with two seniors -- Shinobu Morito who fails to graduate due to his absenteeism, and Takumi Mayama who acts as a proper senior to Takemoto.
Takemoto has never thought about his future, until one sunny Spring day he meets the charming Hagumi Hanamoto, and falls in love with her at first sight.
To put it simply, Hachimitsu to Clover is an anime series about youth, love, soul-searching, and self-discovery. Sounds pretty much like a soap opera, doesn’t it?
3. Glass no Kamen
- Genre: Drama, Romance, Shoujo.
Another anime series that has similarities to soap operas is Glass no Kamen, a series that might have been adapted into an Indonesian soap opera titled Topeng Kaca. According to those who watched it, this anime does have cheesy characters.
Glass no Kamen follows Kitajima Maya, a 13-year-old with a talent for acting, discovered by a popular actress, Tsukikage. This anime focuses on the obstacles she has to go through, and Maya’s development to become the leading actress of her generation.
Just like soap operas, Maya has a rival named Himekawa Ayumi, a beautiful young woman who’s also one of the most sought-after actresses. Will Maya succeed in getting through the obstacles?

- Genre: Drama, Music, Romance, Slice of Life.
Next up, we have White Album 2, an anime with complicated love conflicts. This anime follows the love triangle between Haruki Kithara and the two girls -- Setsuna Ogiso and Kazusa Touma.
Since the love story is considered too cheesy, many viewers believe White Album 2 is a soap opera anime with a dash of musical elements in it. Do you agree?
5. Kimi no Iru Machi
- Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Romance, Shounen.
At number five, we have an anime with a plot that focuses on a love triangle titled Kimi no Iru Machi. This series tells the story of Haruto Kirishima, who enjoys a happy life after knowing and getting in a relationship with a girl named Yuzuki Eba. But shortly after, Eba left Haruto.
A few moments later, Haruto moves to the city to find Eba as he still has feelings towards Eba, who already has someone else in her life.
The love triangle in this anime series isn’t that complicated as the other series we’ve mentioned above, but the plot is quite dramatic -- just like soap operas in general.
6. Tsuki ga Kirei
- Genre: Romance, School.
Soap opera isn’t the only medium for a love story between junior high students to be featured, there’s also an anime series that has this particular story titled Tsuki ga Kirei. This anime follows two junior high students who have feelings towards each other and have dreams of getting married. However, both Mizuno and Azumi have to go through numerous obstacles.
7. Yesterday wo Utatte
- Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Romance, Seinen.
Last but not least, we have Yesterday wo Utatte. This series follows Rikuo Uozumi, who lives without any plans, working at a minimarket after graduating from college. His daily life is only filled with boring activities until one day he meets a mysterious girl named Haru and his old college crush, Shinako.
