Onoki, The Third Tsuchikage (Earth Shadow), cannot be said as a ninja who lived in his glory; but he had the spirit to protect his beloved village, Iwagakure (Hidden Stone Village). Let’s take a look at some of his hidden interesting facts below.
7. Was Suspected to be Member of Insect Controller Clan
On Naruto Episode 148, Naruto and friends faced the remnants of Kamizuru Clan from Iwagakure; an insect controller clan, a rival to Aburame Clan from Konohagakure. Two members, Jibachi and Kurobachi, stated that the First Tsuchikage, Ishikawa, was their grandparent.
Because Onoki was Ishikawa’s grandchild, and if we follow what they said, then Onoki was Kamizuru Clan descendant and might be able to control insects, especially bees. It was only the clan was outlasted by Aburame Clan and exiled from the village, it might be true that Onoki and other descendants couldn’t have the chance to learn how to control bees.
6. The Only Person to Master Both Kekkei Genkai and Kekkei Tota
Naruto fans are surely familiar with kekkei tota, a Jutsu that consists of three different chakras. Onoki could master Dust Release kekkei tota after trained under The Second Tsuchikage, Mu.
But there is another fact about Onoki’s fighting style. According to Shikamaru Shinden: A Cloud Dancing in Forlorn Falling Petals, Onoki also mastered Lava Release kekkei genkai! It’s not surprising that Dust Release only required Earth, Fire, and Wind Release, while Lava Release only required two initial elements.
5. From Adolescent to Adult, His Height Only Increased 5 cm...?
According to Naruto Secret: Scroll of People Character Official Databook, or Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho (which sadly had limited release) guidebook, Onoki, who was 79 years old, had 130 cm tall.
Funny enough, if we take a look at his character design at Studio Pierrot (or also known as 'settei'), Onoki’s height when he was adolescent when he was tasked to clean Iwa Monument by his grandfather, was 125,5 cm. Does that mean for decades, his height only increased around 5 cm?
4. Always Avoid Bloodsheds in His Village
Onoki was known by many as ‘Both Scales’ or ‘Fence-Sitter’ because he often looked at the problems and solutions from two sides. This was shown during the Third Shinobi World War: when Konohagakure offered a peace agreement, even though denied by Iwa Council, Onoki insisted to accept it to avoid bloodshed.
The same action later saw again in the Boruto series. After losing his grandson’s life, Kozuchi, to some nukenin (rogue ninjas), Onoki investigated White Zetsu’s body remnants and created a synthetic man called Akuta; with a hope using them as a soldier to replace Iwagakure’s people to avoid more young generations losing their life in the battlefield.
3. Was One of the Oldest Kage
Taken from Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho, Onoki still in office at 79 years old during Naruto Shippuden. 'Rivaling' another oldest Kage, Hiruzen Sarutobi The Third Hokage, the later died in battle during the Destruction of Konoha around 68 or 69 years old.
Sadly, we didn’t have any information regarding other Kage’s ages like The First Mizukage, Byakuren, and so far, only Onoki who was known to be the oldest Kage.
2. His Nickname’s Meaning
As we said above, Onoki called as ‘Both Scales’ - or Onoki no Ryotenbin in Japanese. Ryotenbin itself is literally ‘the both [sides] in the same scale’ and pointing to ‘two different arguments’ or ‘two different alternatives’ from one problem.
That thing described his nature who always thinking for the best solutions objectively and looking for the best solutions in a problem.
1. His Nickname Corresponds to His Astrological Sign
Still based on Naruto Hiden: Sha no Sho, it is stated that Onoki’s birthdate is October 8. The date makes the Third Tsuchkage born as a Libra, or a scale, according to Western Astrological Sign. A perfect fit for his nickname, right?
