Marvel fans surely familiar with this antihero, Frank Castle aka The Punisher. This one has no superpowers whatsoever or equipped with advanced gadgets are known for his violent nature when punishing bad guys as an act of revenge.

His popularity makes Marvel adapt the hero into live-action movies back in 2004 and 2009. His nature as an antihero as well as his tragic past makes Castle only known with actions.

7. Once Wanted to be a Priest

Frank Castle, or known as the Punisher, is an Italian descendant who was born in New York as Francis Castiglione. Frank is an ex-United States Marine captain even though at first he doesn’t want to be a soldier as he wanted to be a Catholic priest. But he later changes his mind because he cannot forgive crimes easily. Castle also once deployed to Vietnam for a mission and won many bravery awards.

6. Delivered by Vengeance

Castle has a wife named Maria. One day, after returning from Vietnam, Castle, as well as his children, witnessing an execution act conducted by the Costa mafia family. Unbeknownst to him, he and his family involved in the center of the feud. The family later killed them to erase eyewitnesses, but only Castle survives. Later, even though Castle can easily recognize the shooter, but the police cannot do anything. It’s due to the massive Costa family’s influence that even can influence the police.

Saw this occurrence, Castle decides that the only way to punish the shooter is by violence. Ever since that day, Castle decides to banish villains (including Costa family) by his hands.

5. A Vietnam War Veteran 

Did you know that Punisher is known as the Vietnam war veteran? For years, he trained himself to be a perfect combatant. On the battlefield, he trained his combat ability and killing instinct. Castle learned war tactics, operating vehicles, and using various firearms.

As same as other soldiers, Castle often haunted by his experience during the war. Even though he is trained in killing and packed with skills he learned at Navy SEALS, Airborne school, and in the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, Castle still experiences an inner conflict every time he wants to kill.

4. Loves Firearms

There are many superheroes in comic books that carry firearms, such as Deadpool, Deadshot, Cable, Jason Todd, and Grifter, but nobody beats The Punisher. Especially the gunfire produced. In action, The Punisher always prepares hundred of weapons like pistol, knife, and other tactical weapons he needed for the situation, even he carries so many types of weapons as possible.

3. Inspired from Fictional Character

Mack Bolan is a famous fictional character created by Don Pendleton that has appeared in a hundred books. His story tells about the titular character who fight against mafia families with violence. As the best sharpshooter at war makes Bolan called “The Executioner”. He also lost his family due to the mafia, so he dedicates himself to fight back the family that took his family.

The similarities between the Punisher and Mack Bolan is very spot on, and almost the entire story in Mack Bolan’s novels has similarities with The Punisher’s.

2. Once Dead and Later Resurrected

Like other comic book characters, Castle once told to have experience death and later resurrected, but he resurrected in three different ways. The most unique tale of his resurrection is in the Dark Reign storyline, where Castle told dead at the hands of Daken, Wolverine’s son. Luckily, Morbius and Man-Thing resurrect himself as Franken-Castle. This incarnation fights alongside other monsters and depicted as a giant monster wielding heavy artillery. At the end of the story, Franken-Castle goes back to his old self.

Castle who attempts to begin his judgment is only a human with no superpower whatsoever. Often in his actions, Castle, as his alter ego, must face with various masked superheroes like Daredevil or Spider-Man. At some point, he even kidnaps Daredevil but sometimes helping him. As a captain during his service in the military, Castle is a man who masters in a fistfight, using firearms, and planning tactics.
