The world of manga is often a beautiful place, filled with fantasy, escapism, and endless possibilities. However, sometimes it's worth exploring the darker side of manga—one filled with fear and horror. Unlike movies or TV shows, manga cannot rely on loud noises or jump scares to frighten its audience.

Horror manga artist Junji Ito is a master of crafting horror in a way that leaves readers with chills after every page turn. His works are well-known among manga fans, and his unique artistic style and aesthetic make his work stand out.

Here are some of Junji Ito’s most terrifying creations! Curious? Let’s dive into them together.

1. Uzumaki

Uzumaki is often considered one of Junji Ito’s best works. It tells the story of a girl living in a small town called Kurouzu-cho, which roughly translates to "Black Vortex Town." The protagonist, Kirie, and her boyfriend, Shuichi, begin noticing strange occurrences in their town and reluctantly attempt to uncover the hidden secrets behind them.

Uzumaki, meaning "spiral," follows the supernatural and gruesome deaths of Kurouzu-cho’s residents, all involving a growing obsession and paranoia surrounding spirals and spiral-like shapes.

2. Billions Alone (Army Of One)

Although published in 2004, Billions Alone, sometimes translated as Army of One, remains relevant today. The manga explores a mysterious phenomenon of mass murders that baffles society.

This story presents horrifying events that force people to isolate themselves for their own safety and survival.

3. Venus In The Blind Spot

Venus in the Blind Spot isn’t just about supernatural horror or the possibility of aliens. While it does feature some traditional horror elements, its real terror lies in the relationships between characters and the crimes committed by seemingly ordinary people.

The most chilling aspect of this manga is how horrifying actions can stem from human emotions like despair, lust, and possessiveness.

4. The Earthbound

The Earthbound tells the story of a mysterious supernatural force that takes control of people across an entire town. Suddenly, sightings of individuals frozen in eerie poses become increasingly frequent. Asano, the protagonist, decides to investigate the phenomenon and uncover the mystery behind it.

Each victim is forced into a specific pose at a particular location, unable to move their bodies until they eventually decay. The Earthbound explores themes of body horror, supernatural forces, and the terrifying impact they can have on the human mind.

5. I Don't Want To Be A Ghost (Anything But A Ghost)

This story follows a young man named Shigeru and his chilling encounter with a mysterious woman who seems to bring misfortune.

One night, while walking home from work, Shigeru meets a blood-soaked woman on the roadside. He later learns that her name is Misaki and takes her to a doctor. Shockingly, Misaki is completely unharmed—there isn’t a single scratch on her. The blood covering her body isn’t even hers.

This eerie story unravels the mystery of Misaki, why she’s so drawn to Shigeru, and how her presence ultimately destroys his life.

6. The Enigma Of Amigara Fault

One of Junji Ito’s most terrifying and famous works, The Enigma of Amigara Fault, delivers spine-chilling body horror and unsettling mysteries.

After a massive earthquake, a mysterious fault line is discovered on the northern slope of Mount Amigara. News coverage reveals human-shaped holes in the mountainside, which inexplicably attract many people.

As more residents arrive, they begin feeling an unexplainable urge to find and enter the hole that they believe was “made for them.”

7. The Human Chair

Originally written by mystery and thriller author Edogawa Ranpo, The Human Chair was adapted by Junji Ito, whose artistic skills elevate the story into a deeply unsettling experience.

The story revolves around a woman who begins feeling an eerie paranoia—an unshakable sense that she’s being watched or constantly surrounded by an unseen presence. Ito’s haunting illustrations amplify the fear, making the horror even more immersive for readers.
