There are some games that are seemingly innocent, yet actually have profound stories that can make you cry.

Don’t judge a book by its cover, that’s probably the best way to describe a product when it comes to quality. But it also has another meaning. Have you ever listened to a song that sounds cheerful that makes you want to dance, yet actually it has a sad or depressing meaning? It’s also the same case with video games.
On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of some seemingly cheerful, innocent games, yet actually have emotional and even tragic stories. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
1. Undertale
Undertale needs no introduction. This game has been so popular among gamers and has been made into several memes related to Sans. But in case you haven’t heard about it, Undertale is a game that breaks the previously established cliche RPG formula.
Each ending will strike you with emotional feelings about friendship, perspectives, and makes you wonder who’s the real “monster”.
2. The Ori Series
Ori has bright and colorful visuals, if you just see screenshots of it or on the home page, you won’t get the impression that this game would be so melancholic. Ori doesn’t take too long before it plays your emotion.
Within the first few minutes, the game will hit your feelings with a strong relationship between the two main characters and the tragic story, which is the conflict of the story. The opening sequence is delivered without a single dialogue between the two characters with some narrations conveyed with made-up language.
3. Mother 3
When it comes to Nintendo, many would expect child-friendly content, yet Mother 3 is the only exception. This JRPG, which was released for Gameboy Advance, features a story full of tragic moments that befalls the main character.
4. Omori
Omori warns players about the sensitive content the game presents throughout the story, but if a gullible player judges the game at a glance or gets recommended by a friend, they may be deceived by it.
Omori is a story about grief, depression, and trauma. If you’re interested in turn-based RPGs with an emotional story, you should have this game on your wishlist.

5. Night in the Woods
This game focuses on some serious stuff, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and lower-middle-class oppression from the perspective of a cat named Mae, who has just been expelled from college.
The emotional impact of this game doesn’t come from dramatic moments or bombastic conflicts but through implications. If you play the game expecting a melodrama with dilemmatic romance, don’t expect this game to satisfy your wishes.
6. The Beginner’s Guide
Created by the creators of The Stanley Parable, which is one of the most hilarious games ever made, gamers had high hopes for Davey Wreden’s second game. Yet what they got was a heart-wrenching punch instead.
The Beginner’s Guide follows Davey who meets a game developer, ‘Coda’. Coda’s games always catch Davey’s attention, not because of the level design nor complex gameplay, but because of the abstractive nature and Davey feels there’s a message from each game.
7. Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter
Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter is an adventure game where you can draw your own protagonist using the touch screen feature from Nintendo DS. The gameplay is what you expect from an E-rated (everyone) game, from its art style aspect, the game looks colorful and looks like a fantasy from a child.
Yet at the end of the game, you’ll be hit by a plot twist that changes your reaction dramatically.
8. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
This game was initially released for Gameboy but has been remade for Nintendo Switch. The Switch version arguably looks more adorable with bright colors, but many fans agree that Link’s Awakening is one of the most heartbreaking installments in the Zelda series.
Although it’s titled ‘The Legend of Zelda’, Zelda doesn’t make an appearance in Link’s Awakening. Instead, you’ll meet a new character named Marin.
So, those were the 8 seemingly cheerful games yet have depressing stories. Stick around for more anime and gaming info, and make sure to follow Dunia Games on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates.
