The 2022 first issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shonen magazine made an announcement on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. The announcement explains that Square Enix's RPG smartphone game Gate of Nightmares is getting a manga adaptation. Yoshinori Matsuoka is in charge of drawing the manga, which will launch in the Magazine Pocket app on December 8, 2021. Hiro Mashima and Square Enix are credited as creators of the original work.

The combined second and third issues of Weekly Shonen Magazine will also publish the first chapter of Gate of Nightmares on December 8, 2021. Square Enix released Gate of Nightmares on October 26, 2021. The game features character designs and settings created by the creator of Fairy Tail and Edens Zero, Hiro Mashima.

Gate of Nightmares is a fantasy tale of traditional sword fighting and magic. The story is set in the real world and Lemurias, a parallel world where all the dreams of many people can come together and come true. In Lemurias, monstrous creatures known as Nightmares were born out of the fear and suffering of many.

The story begins with the meeting of a girl named Emma and a boy named Azel. Emma is a Nightwalker, trained to fight the Nightmares. Azel is a boy who can attract Nightmares for his own sake.

Jin Fujisawa, screenwriter for Square Enix's legendary Dragon Quest series, wrote the screenplay for the game Gate of Nightmares. Yasuharu Takanashi, who composed the music for the anime television series Fairy Tail, is also composing the music for Gate of Nightmares.
