In terms of sports anime, basketball is right up there with baseball and football in terms of popularity. Basketball anime series are also quite diverse and all of them are favored by many fans of sports anime.

On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the best basketball anime series that are certainly worth watching. Without further ado, let's get into it.

10+ Best Basketball Anime Recommendations

1. Slam Dunk

Based on the most popular manga series by Takehiko Inoue, this 1993-1996 basketball anime has set the standard for the subsequent basketball anime series.

In this series, the tough, troublemaker Hanamichi Sakuragi joins his school's basketball team to impress a girl. Yes, Slam Dunk is a romantic comedy series and a sports series.

This anime is amazing, especially given the years it's released in the 90s, and it tells a good story about the team's rise to the top and Hanamichi Sakuragi's self-development.

2. Kuroko no Basuke

The 2012-2015 basketball anime series features the genius, yet invisible "shadow" basketball player, Tetsuya Kuroko. In middle school, Kuroko was on the top basketball team that dominated various championships.

However, when he entered high school, his middle school teammates all go to other schools. Kuroko must now compete against his former teammates with his new ones at Seirin High.

3. Ahiru no Sora

The 2019-released anime Ahiru no Sora is the opposite of Slam Dunk. While the classic 1990s series follows a tough guy who joins a basketball team, Ahiru no Sora follows a basketball team full of delinquents.

The protagonist, Sora Kurumatani, tries his best to get delinquents interested in actually playing basketball. Sora himself is short, yet he has some slick tricks to help him get past opponents' defense.

4. Buzzer Beater

The 2005–2007 anime series Buzzer Beater began as another Takehiko Inoue basketball manga series. Unlike Slam Dunk, this series takes place in the future, and features aliens playing basketball.

It seems that when the aliens arrive, they are physically stronger and naturally better at the game than humans. The story echoes common issues about racial superiority in sports. The series features an all-human team trying to win back glory for Earth.

5. Dear Boys

This basketball anime series of 2003 was based on a manga that began in 1989. Various prequel and sequel manga series kept the franchise afloat for decades. Despite the long-running manga, the anime only lasted one season. Fans have received no confirmation regarding Season 2, remake, or reboot of the series.

This basketball anime tells the story of Mizuho High School. Initially, the men's team only had five players. Enough to fill all positions, yet they have no substitutes.

6. Ro-Kyu-Bu!

This anime features a high school basketball player coaching an all-girl elementary school team. This 2011 anime had an OVA, and a 2013-released sequel Ro-Kyu-Bu! SS. This anime is also based on the light novel series of the same title.

Given the characters and the main premise of a high school student trying to teach the principles of good basketball to five mischievous young girls, this is clearly not going to be a serious basketball series.

This schoolgirl comedy series may appeal more to Mitsudomoe fans than Slam Dunk fans. But if you are looking for a combination of cute girls and basketball, this anime is certainly worth-watching.

7. I’ll/ CKBC

I’ll/ CKBC began as a manga series by Hiroyuki Asada that ran from 1995-2004. The series also received an OVA in 2002.

CKBC stands for Crazy Kouzu Basketball Club. This series follows a new student, Tachibana Akane, and her rival, Hiiragi Hitonari. When they both join the basketball club, their rivalry continues to propel them forward, but all the while leading their team to victory. However, Hiiragi also has some family problems to deal with off the court.

8. Onagawa Chuu Baske Bu: 5-nin no Natsu

A special anime released in 2017, Onagawa Chuu Baske Bu: 5-nin no Natsu is an anime that can crush you with its emotional story.

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake is considered one of the deadliest in Japan. This disaster recorded a staggering 15,899 victims.

As a display of their resilience, Onagawa Middle School's girls' basketball team continues to play. Even if they only have five players in the team.

9. Breakers

Breakers focuses on one aspect of sports that is rarely discussed in any anime, namely the paralympics. The anime actually features four sports: goalball, paralympic swimming, track, and wheelchair basketball.

The first episode features wheelchair basketball as the main highlight, and it shows how appealing the sport actually is as well as how talented the athletes really are.

This anime makes for an entertaining way to play a different style of basketball that few would think of. It is definitely a unique series for anyone to watch.

10. Mitsu x Mitsu Drops

Mitsu x Mitsu Drops is a shoujo anime that follows the Houjou Academy basketball team, which has a quite strange master-slave system.

A "slave", also known as a "honey", has to do whatever her master asked her to do. In return, a honey is exempt from paying tuition.

Kai Renge, the star player of the Houjou academy basketball team, is also Hagino Yuzuru's master. He's a student struggling to pay school tuition. What makes basketball a highlight in this series is that the loser has to give up his honey.
