10 Anime That Feature Lots of Characters
Having a wide array of side characters is great to support the storyline. But these anime series went the extra mile by having lots of characters.
Anime & Manga | 08 October
Usually, an anime series only has a bunch of characters throughout the entire story. However, some anime series are known for having lots of important characters who play quite significant roles in the main plot.
Granted, when a series introduces way too many characters, sometimes the progression of the storyline suffers from the numerous character introductions, making them less favorable for the audience. However, some anime series boast a long list of characters yet manage to assimilate them into the plot really well while also giving them important roles in the storyline.
Here are the 10 anime series with huge casts that feature lots of characters.
1. Tokyo Revengers
Tokyo Revengers is a time-travel anime that follows a man named Takemichi Hanagaki who learns that he can travel back and forth between his present as an adult and his past as a high school student.
When he learns about the death of his ex-girlfriend from high school, Takemichi vows to alter the past to save Hinata Tachibana.
Since this anime has events that take place both in the past and present, it can be a bit difficult to keep up with every character in the series. In addition to that, there are lots of gang members and leaders introduced in this anime.
2. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War
Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is one of the best anime series that started out with only a number of characters. However, in the latest season, the anime began to add several characters, to the point where it's getting hard to remember them given that they only have a small impact on the story.
This anime managed to give the main protagonist motivation and clear character development. However, the addition of side characters got the story a bit messy.
3. Yuri On Ice
Yuri On Ice tells the story of Yuri Katsuki and his efforts to re-enter the world of competitive skating. With the help of his coach, Victor Nikiforov, Yuri hopes to win a medal in the upcoming competition. And you may have guessed it, the competition is where the series introduces lots of new characters.
There are too many character introductions in just a few episodes before Yuri's match.
4. Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks is part of the Fate series that tells the story of the war for the holy grail. However, Unlimited Bladeworks has tons of new characters that are constantly popping up.
Granted, there are old characters making their return in the series, but there are also lots of new characters that viewers have to keep up with. Most of these characters are from the previous series, but there are also characters that are completely new.
With so many characters, it's hard for viewers to remember who and what the motivations of each character are.
5. Ansatsu Kyoushitsu
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu tells the story of failing students who are assigned to assassinate their teacher Koro-sensei, who has blown up the moon.
Overall, the anime manages to do a very good job when it comes to character development, despite the huge number of students in this series that the audience has a hard time remembering.
New students and teachers are added throughout the series, making it much more difficult to remember the entire cast. Nonetheless, this anime is still a really great show.
6. Boku no Hero Academia
Boku no Hero Academia is an anime with a fairly unique storyline as it follows a group of young (and pro) heroes both on the field and in training. Since it features so many heroes and villains, anything can happen in this anime. Viewers also have the opportunity to see different perspectives from each side.
Also, because there are so many characters, some important characters have to be downplayed for the sake of the main protagonist. Surely it's disappointing for the audience as there are many side characters who have become fan favorites.
However, Boku no Hero Academia manages to tell the background of each character well without wasting time telling it.
7. Shokugeki no Souma
Another anime with a large cast of characters is Shokugeki no Souma, an anime that follows Souma Yukihira's journey as he tries to rise to the ranks at the prestigious Totsuki Culinary Academy.
The school's policy is to settle all disputes through a cooking competition. Yukihira has countless competitors at Totsuki Academy, and it's hard for viewers to remember all of them.
8. Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan tells the story of Eren Yeager and the 104th Training Corps. As the story progresses, a lot of characters are added, and it can be quite confusing at first for the audience to remember all of them, let alone understand the plot.
In addition to that, Attack on Titan also has a long list of characters killed in the series, so you may have a hard time remembering the ones that are still alive and the ones who have died. This anime does maintain its focus on Eren and the people around him, but a lot of fans are disappointed that some side characters appear and disappear so quickly throughout the show.
9. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
The Joestar family is big enough that it takes five seasons to follow each generation of the bloodline. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure tells the story of various members of a powerful family as they battle numerous adversities. Every new descendant of the family encounters new and old characters.
10. Fullmetal Alchemist
Most anime series that are set in wartime tend to have a big cast of characters. Fullmetal Alchemist is an anime about the journey of the Elric brothers as they search for a cure for their suffering.
Throughout their journey, the Elric brothers meet a lot of people, fight and make friends with quite a number of characters.
