This week’s Anime of The Week column from Dunia Games is about Tokyo Revengers, which went viral throughout 2021 due to the popularity of Mikey, who is often used as a profile picture by many people on various social media. Its unique story and intriguing plot to follow is also one of the many factors why the anime about the Tokyo Manji motorcycle gang, which is based on Ken Wakui's manga, is so popular.
The dark and chaotic world of delinquents and motorcycle gangs is presented neatly and attractively in Tokyo Revengers. You can learn more about Tokyo Revengers in this week’s Anime of The Week column below!
A Recommended Anime If You Like Delinquent Brawls
If you like the story of a delinquent world like Crows Zero or Beelzebub, it seems that Tokyo Revengers is recommended for you. Telling about the daily life of a motorcycle gang based in Shibuya named Tokyo Manji or Touman, the characters involved in this group want to create a new era of delinquents in Japan where motorcycle gangs can be appreciated more than ever.
This seemingly impossible goal is even harder to achieve because Tokyo Manji has many rival gangs such as Moebius and Valhalla. Not to mention the feuds and betrayals between members of the motorcycle gang that could trigger the transformation of Tokyo Manji into an evil organization in the future.
Tokyo Manji’s leader Sano Manjiro, nicknamed Invincible Mikey, must run his gang so as not to deviate from his sincere ideals. The support from those closest to him such as Ryuguji Ken or Draken the vice-captain as well as the co-founders of Tokyo Manji and Tokyo Revengers’ main protagonist, Takemichi Hanagaki, are additional strength for Mikey to create the heyday of motorcycle gangs.
Ken Wakui, the mangaka of Tokyo Revengers, has admitted that this story was inspired by his experience when he was a member of a motorcycle gang in his youth. Therefore, you can feel the nostalgic 2000s era while enjoying Tokyo Revengers.

The Butterfly Effect Plot Makes it a Recommended Time Traveling Anime Too
Not only about delinquents and violent motorcycle gangs, what makes Tokyo Revengers’ story unique is the time-traveling that can change the future or usually known as the Butterfly Effect. The main protagonist of this story is Takemichi Hanagaki who is doing odd jobs and sees the news of his ex-girlfriend in middle school named Hinata Tachibana's murder on a TV station section about the Tokyo Manji gang feud in 2017.
Almost getting hit by a train while falling onto the tracks at the station, Takemichi instead returns to 2005 in his teenage body when he was still in middle school. Takemichi also tries to change the dark future by changing Tokyo Manji so that it doesn't become an evil organization.
He time-traveled back and forth between 2005 and 2017 by handshaking Naoto Tachibana, the younger brother of Takemichi's lover.
Future Naoto as police officer helps Takemichi investigate Tokyo Manji and the people who influence the gang and facilitate Takemichi to meet some of the delinquents as well as death row inmates too. The time-traveling that creates alternative events in the future is why Tokyo Revengers is one of the most exciting and thrilling time travel-themed anime.
