Just like the popular spy movie franchises, anime series that revolve around spies/secret agents always manage to keep the audience on the edge of their seats with the plots. Recently, one anime that revolves around a family of spies, Spy x Family, has become the talking point for many anime fans. It’s mainly because of the series’ plot and the comedic moments.

1. Joker Game
This series has 12 episodes and 2 OVAs and was released in 2016. It’s adapted from the 2015 movie titled 'Joker Game'. Joker Game is set in World War II and follows the Japanese spy training organization called D Agency, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki.
According to the rumors, Yuuki was previously a genius agent who managed to obtain enemy intel and got betrayed by the Allies. That’s what inspired him to establish a spy agency. Of the hundreds of candidates, only 8 make it as agents. These agents are taught not to trust anyone, he calls this training system the 'Joker Game’.
2. Senkou no Night Raid
It tells the story of a Japanese super-secret intelligence agency called Sakurai Kikan and the 4 members of staff who possess unique abilities. They are Kazura Iha, who’s a teleporter, Natsume Kagiya, who has night vision, Aoi Miyoshi, who possesses telekinetic powers, and Yukina Sonogi, who has telepathic abilities.
They are all assigned to Shanghai in 1931, the day when World War I between China and Japan draws near. These agents have to move quickly before the worst thing occurs. The interesting thing about this series is the language used by them when they encounter the targets in other countries. For example, when they’re dealing with the Manchurians, they speak in Mandarin.
3. Higashi no Eden (Eden of the East)
A girl named Saki Morimi is on her way to America on her graduation trip. When she’s in front of the White House, she finds herself saved from unexpected trouble by Akira Takizawa, a young man who suffers from amnesia. Upon gaining his conscience, he has a cell phone, which is loaded with 8.2 billion Yen.
Despite the mysteries surrounding him, Saki gets close to Akira without knowing much about him. When returning to Japan with the hope of rediscovering his true identity, Akira unwillingly gets involved in a world-security matter that also involved money, cell phones, and a plane crash that happened the previous Monday. This anime series has a mind-boggling plot twist teeming with political elements. You’ll be on the edge of your seat and keep guessing who’s the real enemy and the mastermind behind all of the events.
4. Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
The 25 episodes series is set in 300 years after the events in The Calamity War, which was the conflict between humans on Earth and the outer space colonies. A girl named Cordelia tries to free the Mars’ inhabitants who are currently under Earth’s control. She moves to Earth for a negotiation to end the conflicts and gain independence for Mars’ inhabitants. In her mission, Cordelia formed a team called Chryse Guard Security to protect her. She also meets a quiet young man named Mikazuki Augus, who has his personality altered after using the Gundam Machinery.
5. Ghost in the Shell
Set in the future, Ghost in the Shell follows a female cyborg named Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the special ops division called Section 9. Since she’s a cyborg, Motoko possesses superhuman and bionic abilities that help her carry out her missions. While the entirety of her body is a machine, her brain and a segment of her spinal cord remain intact.
Motoko along with her cyborg friends fight cybercrimes that threaten the stability of the country. Aside from that, a long-standing internal conflict hinders the cyborgs’ existence. This anime series is full of sci-fi elements and actions and is certainly a must-watch if you love spy/secret agent anime series.

6. Darker than Black
The story begins with a strange and mysterious place called Hell's Gate that suddenly appears in Tokyo, veiling the night sky and hindering the vision of the residents. Instead, fake stars begin to emerge, representing each of the Keikakusha (Contractors), people who are granted supernatural abilities. These fake stars also pinpoint the location of the Contractors, they will react whenever the Contractors use their powers. Because of this, many countries use the Contractors as spies.
Contractors were originally humans, but after the appearance of the Gate ten years ago, some people began to show supernatural abilities. One of the Contractors, Hei, whose codename is Messier BK-201, has a past related to the conflict between the Contractors and the governments.
7. Allison to Lillia
This anime is set in a continent divided into two after centuries of war. Allison and Will are on a mission to look for the treasure that will put an end to this war. With the hopes of passing down this treasure to their daughter, Lillia, who strives to unite the divided nations.
8. Heavy Object
Another anime series that revolves around espionage and is set in the future, Heavy Object is set in a world where the nature of war has utterly changed. All of the countries go to war using machines called the "Objects", armored vehicles that are soundproof and run like Tanks with destructive powers.
The story follows Qwenthur Barbotage, a student who’s currently studying Objects and aspires to become an Object technician. And Havia Winchell, a radar analyst who serves in the 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion to support the Baby Magnum, one of the country’s Objects. You’ll also see Milinda Brantini, the Baby Magnum pilot on her mission throughout the world.
9. Double Decker
In the city-state of Lisvalleta, the people live peacefully even in the midst of crimes and a dangerous new drug that is slowly taking over the place. "Anthem" is a highly deadly drug that can ruin the city-state. A Special Crime Investigation Unit called SEVEN-O is tasked with dealing with the issue. In this city-state, lives an ordinary police officer named Vrubel Kirill who dreams of becoming a hero. He joins forces with Doug Billingham, a seasoned detective to find out everything about the dangerous drug, in a team that works under the Double Decker System.
10. Release the Spyce
This series follows Minamoto Momo, a high school student who aspires to become a police officer just like her father. However, she lacks confidence. One day, she meets Mei and Goe who invite her to join the Tsukkikage, a private intelligence agency that protects the city and its citizens. Along with her senior named Yuki, Momo protects the city in the shadows.
