The Meaning Behind "Be a Flower"

About The Apothecary Diaries Anime

The Apothecary Diaries is one of the anime that will air in fall 2023 on Netflix. This anime story follows the journey of Maomao, a 17 year old female pharmacist who initially lived in a brothel area, but was later kidnapped and sold as a servant in the royal palace.

While at the palace, Maomao becomes interested in rumors about the mystery of the curse among the concubines and ladies-in-waiting. With skill, knowledge, and sharp analysis, Maomao managed to find a cure for the disease that was spreading among the concubines, which earned her a promotion from a low-ranking servant.

The Apothecary Diaries anime is an adaptation of the Japanese light novel or web novel series written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. Initially, the novel was published online in 2011 on the user novel publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. The following year, The Apothecary Diaries was published in one volume by Shufunotomo. In 2014, this novel was adapted into a light novel series.

This light novel was then made into two manga series in 2017, the first published by Square Enix in Monthly Big Gangan, and the other by Shogakukan in Monthly Sunday Gene-X. The novel was later digitally licensed in North America by J-Novel Club and printed by Square Enix. The manga illustrated by Nekokurage is also licensed by Square Enix. Due to its interesting story, this novel is very popular among Japanese readers, and currently 14 light novel volumes have been published.

The Apothecary Diaries anime was produced by Toho Animation Studio and OLM with Norihiro Naganuma directing and supervising the script, and Akinori Fudesaka acting as assistant director. Meanwhile, the character designs were handled by Yukiko Nakatani and Satoru Kosaki, Kevin Penkin, and Alisa Okehazama who composed the anime music.
