What is Isekai?

Before we get into the discussion about isekai, the writer would like to give a brief explanation of this term. Isekai is a subgenre of games, anime, manga, and light novels. But if we have to translate the term from Japanese, isekai means “different world”. 

The “different world” in this context doesn’t mean a world that filled with supernatural elements, but a fantasy world that is way different from the world we currently live in.

Most of the main characters of the isekai series were just a “regular joe” in their world, but then they’re transferred into a different universe, reborn (reincarnated), or accidentally trapped in a parallel universe, then those characters bestowed with unfathomable powers.

Initially, isekai was categorized in the fantasy genre, but as time goes on, isekai has become its own genre since 2017 with the many light novels and manga with isekai background. Yet, up until now, in Japan, the isekai genre is still not an official genre to categorize a series.

Why Do People Love the Isekai Series?

Isekai series are indeed popular among anime fans around the globe, including fans in Indonesia. But what makes this genre loved by many fans?

The main reason for that is because most of the isekai series have unique storylines, easy to follow, and quite engaging since they follow the main characters’ journey in the entirely different universes and start their new life in a strange place, bestowed with unique powers.

The unique powers in this context can differ from above-average intellectual powers to spiritual powers such as the power to re-live their lives that allow the main characters to cheat death altogether, their lives in the isekai universe will go on a loop till they’re able to avoid the main reason that leads to their death.

Another reason why people love isekai anime or manga is that they usually have comedic moments in them that make us laugh on the silly things the main characters do in those series.

Yet another reason why they’re so lovable is that isekai series usually have elegant, beautiful, and adorable female characters that can easily be the waifu of your dreams.

Does Isekai Really Exist?

In common sense, isekai, or “different world/parallel universe” is somewhat impossible to exist since there still no one who succeeded in proving otherwise. Aside from that, isekai itself is just a genre of anime series, manga, or light novels. So, rest assured, the parallel universe that we call as isekai doesn’t exist in the real world.

Theoretically, to get into an isekai itself sounds like a chore since you have to sacrifice your soul to get to the parallel universe and once you’re in it, you will never be able to get back to your original world. In the most cliche scenarios, the main characters in the isekai series die in car accidents, being hit by a passing truck.

As a good and wise weeaboo, surely it never is a good thing to do stuff that will put harm to yourself in a pursue of isekai. Once again, we remind you that isekai doesn’t exist since isekai is nothing but a genre!
