Are you a fan of the anime series Attack on Titan? Recently, Attack on Titan has been the talking point for many netizens since the fourth season started. Due to the massive hype, a considerable amount of people have started to jump on the bandwagon even if that means they have to watch the series from the first episode.

While watching Attack on Titan, you must have experienced having some random thoughts about the anime coming across your mind. One of which is probably “what if the 3D Maneuver Gear exists in real life?”. So, is it possible to build this contraption in real life? Let’s find out in this article.

The Components and How the 3D Maneuver Gear Works

Before we delve deeper into the discussion, let’s take a look at the components of the 3D Maneuver Gear. It’s a device that consists of handgrips; piston-shot grappling-hooks; gas-powered mechanisms; a propeller and sheathes for the blades. For more details, you can see the following picture.

In terms of how this device works in the series, this might be confusing -- as it is too complex. No worries though, because the writer has attached pictures to give you a better understanding.

As you can see from the images above, the fan sections have cables around them that are connected to one part of the device. Basically, when the compressed gas is blown through the mechanism, the part that contains steel wire will explode and shoots out the hooks at high speed.

And, if you want to reuse it, the gas will make the fan rotate in reverse at high distortion, reeling in the steel wire. Once the grappling hook is dug into a surface, by the law of physics, the mechanism will pull you towards the structures/building.

So, how does one control this device? You’re gonna rely on the handgrips, which also serve as the grip for the blades.

They’re basically high-tech grips with four buttons. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get my head around the functions of each button.

However, if I have to guess, the button on the index finger is probably for shooting out the hooks, while the one on the middle finger is to reel in the wire. The one on the thumb is probably to equip the blades and the button on the front is to flow the gas.

Aside from understanding how a 3D Maneuver Gear works, you will also need to get a grasp on how to use it. On top of that, you’re gonna need the courage to handle the speed of using a 3D Maneuver Gear.

In the Attack on Titan anime, it takes, at the very least, 3 years for a trainee to master all of the mechanics -- including learning the types of Titans and the most effective ways to kill them.

One thing that makes it so challenging to master the 3D Maneuver Gear is that you need to balance your entire body and fight the gravitational pull. If you can’t control your center of gravitation, you will find it so arduous to maintain your balance -- and it will be difficult to make a safe landing.

So, how do you balance your body? The trick is to put your weight on the straps around your legs. For example, you can see what Sasha does in the following picture.

Sasha pushes her legs forward and lets herself hang like on a swing. Or, for a better example, you can see the illustration of Eren gliding using the 3D Maneuver Gear.

Eren push his left leg back to absorb the force of the wire shooting out from his right hip -- instead of fighting it with his entire hip, which would be dangerous as he wouldn’t be able to withstand the force.

In conclusion, the use of the 3D Maneuver Gear relies heavily on one’s footing and dexterity in pushing the right buttons on the grips. Not to mention the mental preparedness to maintain focus while gliding with the 3D Maneuver Gear.

Is It Possible to Create A Functional 3D Maneuver Gear in Real Life?

When you see it in the anime, some of you may think that it is possible to realize this device. But, bear in mind that it’s just an anime. In other words, it’s just the imagination of the mangaka made into an animation. So, I can assume that a functional 3D Maneuver Gear would be almost impossible to be made in real life -- unless you’re talking of a replica for cosplay purposes.

Why? The main reason is the volatile, explosive force generated by the 3D Maneuver Gear. Humans won’t be able to withstand said force. As you start gliding, your whole body would be crushed by the tremendous force.

And, it’s also impossible to latch from one building to another with the hooks so quickly. Even if you managed to latch on a structure, it would be difficult to unlatch -- you might even have to unlatch the hook manually.

On top of that, it would take accurate, perfect precision to figure out the right distance of the structure and the maximum length of the wire. Would you be able to make the right estimation and decision while traveling at such a high speed in the air? It doesn’t make sense, does it?

Simply put, you can say that creating a functional 3D Maneuver Gear in real life would be an impossible task.
