Sad news has once again enveloped the world of Japanese anime music. On Tuesday, December 5th 2023, the official account of rock band The Birthday announced that Yusuke Chiba, the band's singer, guitarist, and songwriter, had passed away on November 26th 2023. Yusuke Chiba passed away at the age of 55 after previously announcing a leave of absence to undergo treatment for esophageal cancer in April 2023.

A private funeral was held by Chiba's family and band members. The Birthday plans to hold a public memorial event to honor the artist, and more details will be announced soon.

Born on July 10th 1968 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Yusuke Chiba was the vocalist of Thee Michelle Gun Elephant from 1991 to 2003 and made his major label debut in 1996. He also formed a side project called Rosso, active from 2001 to 2006, before forming The Birthday with members from his previous two bands in 2006.

Yusuka Chiba's works include the lyrics and music for "Dareka Ga," the theme song performed by Puffy AmiYumi in the anime film Naruto Shippuden: The Will of Fire. He also wrote the lyrics for "OOKAMI no NODO," the opening song of Zombie-Loan in the anime series.

In his most recent work, The Birthday performed the opening theme song of the movie The First Slam Dunk titled "LOVE ROCKETS." Farewell, Yusuke Chiba, a maestro who contributed greatly to the world of anime music.
