Attack On Titan: The Reason Why The Final Season Is Split Into Parts
Some fans have been wondering why the Attack on Titan Final Season is divided into several parts. Here are the reasons why.
Anime & Manga | 23 March
Recently, MAPPA has released Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3. Hajime Isayama's story has already garnered a huge and loyal fan base that has been waiting for it for the past few decades. Two years after the Attack on Titan manga ended, the Final Season premiered in March 2023.
Some of you may have been wondering why the Attack on Titan Final Season is divided into several parts. With that in mind, on this occasion, Dunia Games would like to discuss why the Final Season of Attack on Titan is divided into different parts. Without further ado, let's get into it.
Before MAPPA, Wit Studio Worked on the Animation of This Anime
Since the Final Season is split into parts, some people might forget that it began with a different studio that took charge of Attack on Titan animation, which was Wit Studio.
Everything in the first season ran smoothly as they were just starting out and didn't have many other projects in place, although they did have to expand their roster significantly along the way. Season 2, however, was postponed until 2017 and it only has less than half the episodes of Season 1.
Back then, the reason was much simpler. They wanted to give the manga time to continue its story for some time so that when the next season would come out, the manga would still be several arcs ahead. Even though Isayama had been working closely with Wit Studio to bring out the best adaptation of his work, and they're definitely aware of what would happen later in the story, they wanted to keep it this way. It paid off for Season 3 where Isayama wanted to do some things differently because he didn't 100% do it in the manga, that's why some aspects are different in the anime.
The change in studio, however, was one of many reasons for the inception of the split episodes format.
Wit Studio's plan for Season 3 was to simultaneously release 22 episodes. Just like in Season 1, they hired additional people to avoid falling behind schedule, but it still wasn't enough. They had many projects underway at the time, such as Ancient Magus' Bride, After the Rain, Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us and Attack on Titan Season 2.
Additionally, after the big break between Seasons 1 and 2, nobody wanted to wait that long, so they agreed on a 2018-release date. In short, the inevitable production issues forced them to split Season 3 into two parts, one in 2018 and another in 2019.
Massive Workload
Failing to come up with a precise and realistic timeline is one of the main reasons why Season 3 is split into chapters. Wit Studio's contract was not renewed and after all of the show's production issues and impact, most studios were hesitant to consider working on another season of Attack on Titan.
MAPPA is undoubtedly one of the most controversial animation studios for numerous reasons. They are known for taking whatever is thrown at them, overworking their employees and even underpaying them.
Despite having twice the number of employees compared to Wit Studio, they also have twice the ongoing projects and employee turnover rates, which is somewhat precarious due to the lack of pay and hours worked.
In the case of the latest split, MAPPA said in an official announcement that workload was the main reason for delaying Attack on Titan Final Season.
Branding and Marketing
At the heart of Attack on Titan's production issues is a fairly simple problem that could easily be fixed from scratch. Season 3 had to be made that way, because it was planned to be 22-episode long. The split was the final draw of the long series of catastrophes.
With the split of parts, Attack on Titan now also has more episodes. It also creates anticipation and gathers new fans who may be waiting for this anime to reach its new stage. It also increases merchandise sales, and creates a buzz regarding the series on the internet.
MAPPA must have realized that working on the entire Final Season in one-go is an incredibly tough task. At least not without creating a whole new division in MAPPA with hundreds of dedicated workers working on it every day, which is also impossible given the problems with salary within the company and the animation industry in general.
