The shutdown of mobile games is no longer seen as a tragedy it’s more like the changing of seasons in an industry built on fast hype and demanding long-term retention. Anime-based games often ride initial waves of excitement, but not all can maintain momentum beyond launch. Black Clover M: Rise of the Wizard King is now the latest title to fall short.

Launched globally in late November 2023 through a collaboration between South Korea’s Vic Game Studios a subsidiary of Pearl Abyss and Garena, the game initially won over fans of Asta and his squad with cinematic visuals and a relatively generous gacha system. Unfortunately, player numbers declined sharply in just a few months, proving that brand recognition alone doesn’t guarantee long-term engagement. The developers didn’t disclose specific failure metrics but stated they preferred a “graceful farewell” over dragging out a struggling project.

The farewell begins on June 26, 2025, with a final content update inspired by Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. This patch will include two new Mage characters, a series of collection events, and daily login bonuses a last hurrah for the community. The game will then enter maintenance mode until its servers officially close on August 21, 2025. Players can still access the game, but no new features will be added.

This decision has raised eyebrows, especially as Vic Game Studios is preparing to launch its original IP, BREAKERS: Unlock the World. Backed by Pearl Abyss, the studio was seen as having solid production value. However, financial realities licensing costs, marketing budgets, and fierce market competition often force hard choices. Shutting down Black Clover M may be a strategic move to refocus on more sustainable projects.

For players, this serves as a timeless reminder: investing time and money in free-to-play titles always comes with the risk of impermanence. The industry moves on quickly, and new titles are always waiting to fill the void. For Vic Game Studios, the rise and fall of Black Clover M will provide valuable insight for refining future strategies whether in monetization, content pacing, or community management.
