When it comes to war games set in historical events, Call of Duty is definitely one of the biggest franchises. Most of the titles in the series have always been huge hits, making it one of the most anticipated games every year. This year, Activision will release another title, Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Call of Duty: Vanguard was developed by Sledgehammer Games, the indie studio under Activision. The other two titles in the Call of Duty series developed by Sledgehammer Games are Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Infinity Ward.

Josh Bridge, the Game Director of Sledgehammer Games, said that the team developed Call of Duty: Vanguard as they were inspired by the history of World War II. He also did the research and spoke with historical consultants to be able to bring a realistic story for the game they’re developing.

"It feels like a different project than the ones we’ve ever done, so we are very happy to develop it. Inspired by history, we did the research, talked to our advisors regarding the historical aspects, so that we got the reality of the past.

We honor the wars that occurred. And, we associate all of these stories with the characters featured in Call of Duty: Vanguard. We’re very enthusiastic about making this game, and the players will also be," Josh Bridge said.

Josh Bridge also added that given that Call of Duty: Vanguard is set during World War II, there will be no modern weapons nor vehicles, or highly trained soldiers from the current era. That means all of the stories in the game are based on real stories where all soldiers are just trying to survive during a chaotic war-ridden world.

What makes Call of Duty: Vanguard distinguishable from the other games is the atmosphere of the game, which will give you the impression of being a soldier during a massive-scale war. Call of Duty: Vanguard also features profound stories, just like what Josh said. On top of that, you’ll also be seeing various kinds of content in Vanguard, one of the most important things is that it’s inclusive with Warzone!

Campaign Mode and Characters

The Campaign mode contains the main storyline of Call of Duty: Vanguard -- in which players will follow the inception of the Special Forces. In this mode, you’ll experience the struggle of surviving during World War II.

You’ll find the game to be so immersive, as it will make you involved in the war. It’s set before the war breaks with a mission of moving the troops behind the enemy lines. Yet unfortunately, it all goes wrong.

David Swenson, the Campaign Creative Director of Sledgehammer Games, told what the consultant, Martin Morgan, said about the scale of World War II. According to Martin Morgan, the battles during World War II were important and hard-fought, including the results. He also expressed his pleasure at being able to discuss World War II as the setting for Call of Duty: Vanguard.

"The consultant, Martin Morgan, told how massive the battles were during World War II.  These battles also took place in the East and Pacific, in the Solomon Islands. He explained that all of these battles were so intense and were crucial to the outcome.

We see these battles as something that’s really important and fun to be the setting for Call of Duty: Vanguard. What’s even cooler, is to provide a global experience to all gamers in the world," David Swenson said.

David Swenson also mentioned that the team was very excited during concepting the story for Call of Duty: Vanguard, which follows the inception of the specialized troops for certain missions -- and the establishment of the Special Forces.

Why the story of the Special Forces? What’s the purpose?

World War II is sensitive and authentic, so the people at Sledgehammer Games were very cautious in developing the story for Call of Duty: Vanguard. One of the aspects that are worth appreciating from Call of Duty: Vanguard is how Sledgehammer Games features historical characters from World War II.

Although it’s based on real people, there are also some fictional elements that are brought authentically from real stories.

First, is the antagonist, Heinrich Freisinger, the Director of the Gestapo, who’s based on Heinrich Muller, a high-ranking Schutzstaffel and a police officer in Nazi-era Germany. The story begins nearing the end of World War II -- when Berlin is surrounded by the Red Army, and the Nazi party starts to crumble.

During that moment, lots of party members and leaders are trying to take over the position, doing everything possible to push Nazi’s values. One of them is Henrich Freisnger, who, fictitiously, executes the “Phoenix” project. The rumors about the project reach the leaders of the Allied forces.

However, the Allies aren’t aware of the purpose of the Phoenix project. It prompts the Allied forces to form troops using special operators from various countries -- to infiltrate Berlin nearing the end of World War II while also gathering intel regarding the project. Yet unfortunately, during the first mission, the Special Forces get captured in the Gestapo headquarters.

One of the figures who gets involved during the mission is the leader, SGT. Arthur Kingsley, the 9th Parachute Battalion, who’s based on the real-life Sidney Cornell. As a leader, Arthur Kingsley is an amazing character as he’s the person that the allied forces are depending on.

Next, is a female character, LT. Polina Petrova, from 138th Rifle Division, who’s based on Lyudmila Pavllichenko, a Soviet sniper in the Red Army during World War II. Known for killing 309 soldiers using SVT-40 and Mosin Nagant M189.

In the game, Polina fights in Stalingrad, in a long-drawn conflict that changes the course of the war. Here, Polina becomes the hero of her people, inspires those who she has helped.

There’s also CPT. Wade Jackson, from Scouting Squadron Six, who’s tasked with scouting the air in the Pacific. The fictional character is based on Vernon 'Mike' Micheel. Sledgehammer Games was really inspired by his heroics in Midway, becoming a hero by taking down two Japanese aircraft.

In the story, Wade keeps trying to become a great pilot. According to Wade, to be a great pilot, he needs to be formidable not just in the air, but also on land -- when he joins the troops.

2LT. Lucas Riggs, 20th Batallion, is also an important character in Call of Duty: Vanguard. Based on Charles Upham, the New Zealand soldier who’s awarded the Victoria Cross twice during World War II. Lucas fights in North Africa when the British army is fighting Nazi Germany.

Lucas leads the battle in North Africa for the victory of the Allied Forces. That’s why Sledgehammer Games makes Lucas Riggs as the key member of the Special Forces.

In conclusion, Call of Duty: Vanguard follows the inception of the Special Forces during World War II, and their abilities in carrying out the tasks -- stopping the Nazis from advancing.

Multiplayer Mode

Aside from the Campaign mode, there’s also a Multiplayer mode for those who love playing PVP. One thing you need to know about this mode is that it has 20 maps for an 8v8. In addition to that, the Multiplayer mode features tactical gameplay with the return of Gunsmith, the latest customization of ballistics, and adjusted game speed.

The Multiplayer mode also emphasizes Champion Hill. It’s a tournament feature similar to Battle Royale, where players can face off against opponents in Solo (1v1), Duo (2v2), or Trio (3v3) in arenas consist of four maps to become the last squad standing.

Call of Duty: Vanguard will be released globally for various platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Battle.net on November 5.
