Capcom, one of the world’s leading game developers, has recently revealed its list of the top 10 best-selling game series in its history.
This announcement is based on the latest financial report released by Capcom. While some titles like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter were expected to make the list, there are a few surprises from other games that managed to break into the top 10 despite not having released new entries in quite some time.
Capcom was founded in 1979 but didn’t release its first arcade game until 1983. Two years later, the company launched Ghosts n' Goblins and began developing games for home consoles. Since then, Capcom has created many legendary game series, some of which are still active today.
Here is the list of Capcom’s top 10 best-selling games along with the number of units sold:
- Resident Evil - 167 million units
- Monster Hunter - 108 million units
- Street Fighter - 56 million units
- Mega Man - 42 million units
- Devil May Cry - 33 million units
- Dead Rising - 18 million units
- Dragon's Dogma - 13 million units
- Ace Attorney - 13 million units
- Marvel vs. Capcom - 12 million units
- Onimusha - 8.7 million units
Analysis and Interesting Facts
From the list above, it’s clear that Resident Evil remains Capcom’s best-selling series, with over 167 million units sold. This series has been an icon of survival horror since its first release in 1996.
In second place, Monster Hunter has achieved sales of 108 million units, thanks to its growing popularity, especially after the success of Monster Hunter: World. Meanwhile, Street Fighter takes third place with 56 million units sold, solidifying its status as one of the best fighting game franchises of all time.
However, there are some interesting facts behind this list. Some of the series in the top 10 haven’t released new entries in a long time.
For example, Onimusha, which is in 10th place with 8.7 million units sold, last released a new game in 2018 with the remaster of Onimusha: Warlords. Although the series is rumored to be getting a new title, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, fans are still waiting for further updates.
A similar situation applies to Ace Attorney, which has sold 13 million units. The series hasn’t seen a new installment since 2017, although several ports and compilations have been released. The same goes for Dragon's Dogma, which, despite having only two mainline games and one Japan-exclusive MMORPG, has managed to achieve the same sales as Ace Attorney.
This announcement has sparked various reactions from Capcom’s loyal fanbase. Many are calling for new sequels to series like Ace Attorney and Devil May Cry. Some fans have also expressed their excitement for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, while hoping that Capcom won’t disappoint with this project.
On the other hand, some fans are disappointed that their favorite series didn’t make the top 10. For example, Dino Crisis, which hasn’t seen a sequel or remake in a long time, has become a focal point for fans urging Capcom to revive the franchise.
Capcom’s list of top 10 best-selling games not only highlights the company’s financial success but also reflects the diverse legacy of games they have created. Although some series have been dormant for a while, their popularity remains strong among fans.
With high demand from the community, it’s possible that Capcom may revive some of these long-dormant franchises. Let’s wait and see what surprises Capcom has in store for the future!
