Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Prepares Major Update Featuring Its Hardest Boss

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 quickly made a name for itself thanks to its stylish presentation, cinematic combat, and memorable boss encounters. From fluid animation to intense turn-based mechanics, the game delivers a distinctive atmosphere that immediately caught the attention of RPG fans. And now, Sandfall Interactive is preparing to take things even further.
The studio has confirmed that a major free update will arrive in the coming months, bringing a fresh selection of high-level, brutally difficult boss battles. According to producer and COO Francois Meurisse, these upcoming encounters will include some of the toughest challenges the team has ever designed. If you thought the infamous Simon from Act 3 was the peak of difficulty, Sandfall appears ready to prove otherwise.
Expedition 33 already features some standout fights, including the widely praised Dualliste and Sirene battles. These bosses combine theatrical flair with deep RPG strategy, creating encounters that feel as memorable as they are demanding. Yet even within the development team, not everyone managed to defeat every boss in the game — a testament to how unforgiving some of these fights can be.
Among all the enemies in Expedition 33, Simon remains one of the most feared. This optional Act 3 boss is often considered the ultimate test of a player’s mastery. His tragic backstory paints him as a former friend of Verso, manipulated by the Dessendre family and doomed to wander the Abyss. Facing him requires not only skill but also a character level close to the maximum, as his difficulty far exceeds anything found on the main path.
Meurisse explained that Guillaume Broche, CEO and creative director of Sandfall, intentionally designed Simon to be an extreme challenge. Meurisse even admitted that he gave Broche full freedom to make the fight as punishing as he wanted. Although the technical team later softened the encounter slightly for balance purposes, Simon remains a nightmare for even seasoned RPG players.
In an interesting twist, players initially discovered that Maelle’s early build was so powerful it allowed them to defeat Simon in a single hit. This was quickly patched in subsequent updates, restoring the fight to its intended high-level difficulty.
Sandfall Interactive emphasizes that Expedition 33 is built for two types of players: those who seek an atmospheric narrative experience and those who crave challenging, skill-based content. This upcoming update clearly leans toward the latter group. The studio promises faster, more unpredictable, and more mechanically demanding fights designed to push strategies, builds, and reaction timing to their limits.
If Expedition 33 has already demonstrated that it can combine stylish boss design with engaging mechanics, this new update may be the next step in expanding the game’s ambition. With the promise of the hardest boss encounters yet, fans of punishing RPG battles have plenty to look forward to.
