The 2025 Cannes Film Festival officially concluded on May 24, marking the end of one of the most prestigious film events in the world. Running from May 13, the festival featured a wide selection of films from around the globe competing for highly coveted awards such as the Palme d’Or, Grand Prize, Jury Prize, as well as individual honors for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
This year, the film It Was Just an Accident by Iranian director Jafar Panahi took home the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
This win serves as a powerful symbol of international cinema’s celebration and also marks Panahi’s success in delivering a story that is both moving and globally relevant. The film triumphed over strong contenders such as Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and Ari Aster’s Eddington.
In contrast to last year, when the American film Anora by Sean Baker won the Palme d’Or and later achieved Oscar success, this year saw the United States completely shut out despite featuring high-profile films. For instance, Ari Aster’s Eddington did not take home any awards.
Instead, France dominated this year’s event as the primary co-producer behind most of the winning films. Nearly every award-winning film was a French co-production, with the exception of Sound of Falling by Mascha Schilinski, which was fully produced in Germany.
This once again reinforces Cannes’ identity as a stronghold of European arthouse cinema and a tastemaker for high-quality films with potential for global reach.
Other Winners at Cannes 2025
This year’s Best Actor award went to Wagner Moura for his powerful performance in The Secret Agent, a film that also earned Kleber Mendonça Filho the Best Director award. This double win highlights the remarkable talent of the Brazilian filmmaker.
In the Best Actress category, Nadia Melliti was honored for her role in The Little Sister, a drama praised for its emotional depth. Meanwhile, the Best Screenplay award was given to the legendary duo Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne for Young Mothers, adding to their long list of accolades at European film festivals.
The Grand Prize, the second most prestigious award after the Palme d’Or, was awarded to Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier. The film moved the jury with its deeply personal and emotional storytelling. As for the Jury Prize, which celebrates unique artistic vision, it was awarded to two films this year: Sound of Falling and Sirat by Oliver Laxe.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival showcased the richness of global cinema by highlighting works that are not only artistically impressive but also rich in meaning. With European productions dominating and no American winners, this year reflected Cannes’ continued commitment to global independent filmmaking. We’ll be watching to see if the 2025 Cannes winners will follow in the footsteps of Anora and Parasite, crossing over into the Oscars and gaining wider international acclaim.
