The growing global esports industry has made it a widely recognized sport. Esports has become a medal game in various sporting events, from the National Sports Week (PON) to the Olympics. One of the most prestigious sports events that will feature esports in the near future is SEA Games 2021, which will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam.
To prepare the human resources to get the highest achievements, the Indonesian Esports Executive Board (PBESI), as the organization that accommodates all esports activities in Indonesia, holds a National Training Center (Pelatnas) for the 2021 SEA Games under the direction of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI).
The National Training Center (Pelatnas) will take place from 1 March - 30 April 2022, and will serve as the center for preparation, strategy testing, and a chance for the selected coaches and athletes to contribute and reach the highest achievements for the country.
Previously, PBESI has formed a Selection Team, which is tasked with running the selection process from December 2021. In its duties, the Selection Team has collected the track records and achievements of the national esports athletes, as well as organized open qualifiers and national championships to screen the best athletes in each game.
This process involves four selection routes: PON, invitations, National Championship (Kejurnas), coaches’ recommendations, which screened more than 120 athletes and 10 coaches across competitions. The selected athletes and coaches will undergo a physical and mental examination before being put in quarantine for an intensive training program that covers technical, physical, psychological, and mental abilities, strategy, analysis, and nutrition.
The National Training Program will be divided into 2 stages. The first stage will take place from 1-10 March 2022. This stage focuses on training and selecting the individual for the Indonesian contingent for the SEA Games 2021. Whereas the second stage will take place from 11 March-30 April 2022, and will focus on training athletes who are selected to represent the country at the 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Bambang Sunarwibowo of PBESI said, apart from being a preparation for making the highest achievements in the upcoming 2021 SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, the National Training is part of PBESI’s long-term commitment and responsibility to improve the competence and achievements of the athletes on the international stage.
Bambang also stated that with the number of quality, competent human resources and the increasing interest from the public, esports has great potential to become a sport that Indonesian athletes can make their names at the international level.
“With the strategic coaching programs such as the 2021 SEA Games Pelatnas along with its selection and screening processes, we are optimistic that Indonesian esports can be on the leading line, equal and even competing other countries that have established their esports potentials. At the upcoming 2021 SEA Games, we are targeting to be able to contribute gold medals, and we have prepared this National Training to be the training ground for potential talents to further hone their skills,” he stated.
The announcement of the selected athletes and coaches for the 2021 SEA Games Pelatnas was made online and attended by relevant stakeholders in the national esports industry, which includes the Deputy Secretary-General of PBESI, DR. IGM. Kartikajaya, SE, MM, M. AP, and Secretary General of the Central KONI TB Ade Lukman. Meanwhile, the National Training Center was represented by the Head of Pelatnas, RM Ibnu Riza Pradipto, Chairman of the National Selection Christian Suryadi, and Manager of the National Team, Erlangga Putra.
