Discord Creates a New Policy Regarding Usernames, Creating a Market for Selling Accounts
The new policy regarding simpler usernames creates a new business field for people to sell Discord accounts with attractive handles.

For gamers who frequent the virtual world, they must be familiar with an application called Discord. Yup, this application made for gamers and streamers has become a favorite for gamers, video game developers, and others. However, Discord has recently announced a new policy regarding Usernames (or handles), where previously Discord users had handles with quite a unique format because they included "addition" numbers behind the handles' names. Handles are usually used to make adding new friends or mention friends on the Discord forum to make it easier.
Now Discord has revamped the format handles which has brought pros and cons. Based on the statement of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Co-founder of Discord, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the four numbers that usually sit behind "handles" will be removed. The addition of these four numbers can no longer distinguish usernames that have the same name. For Discord users with handles, for example "Kurohige #1234" and "Kurohige #4245", these are two different accounts, even though they have the same first name.
With this new policy, these handles are made simpler by including an "@" symbol in front of the handle's name. This new policy indicates that each user must set up a new and unique handles name.
Here is a comparison of the old Discord username (handles) with the new one:
From the example above, it can be seen that the Discord user username is simpler and similar to Twitter. If initially the handles were named "Kurohige #1234", then the new username will be changed to "Kurohige", and this will be the username that will be used as the display name. Meanwhile, under the display name there will be a new user's "handles". Where both the new display name and handles have different functions.
Handles are used to make it easier for Discord users to invite new friends and differentiate between other Discord user accounts. The name handles rule allows users to use any combination of lowercase or uppercase letters, numbers, or symbols such as the underscore (_) and dash (-).
Meanwhile, the display name is the main name that appears when a user is tagged or mentioned in a group or forum. The display name allows users to use special characters, emoji and more according to the guidelines. The revamp still lets friends or relatives search for users using the old username but doesn't add numbers anymore.
Even during these changes, Discord users had to face a process full of uncertainty and competition. Users wait their turn to choose a new username, which will be rolled out to all users in a few months. Priority will be given based on Discord registration date, so existing users have a better chance of getting the name they want.
This situation raises complex concerns and questions. Regarding who gets to set their username first, is there anything to prevent people from taking popular usernames? What about the risk of impersonation or threats to take over the desired username?
As a result, this new policy regarding handles has also become a business field for a number of individuals who change their name to a "unique and selling" name, so that other Discord users who want that name can buy it. So hopefully, Discord will soon overcome this problem and provide the right solution regarding the handles of old Discord users and new Discord users.
