1. Never Played Double

In tennis, there are two types of matches, Singles, and Doubles. A Singles means that it’s a 1vs1 match, while Doubles is played by two players for each side. Until now, Ryoma has only been shown in Singles in every tournament. Perhaps Coach Sumire sees Ryoma as someone who excels when playing alone rather than in a team of two.

Or perhaps Seigaku already has the ‘Golden Pair' in Kikumaru and Oishi who work perfectly together. They always show great partnership and almost never lost a match. The Golden Pair is even able to perform Synchro, a high-level technique that only world-class players are able to pull off.

2. Can Only Show Affection to His Pet

Ryoma is very cold and never seen smiling nor laughing in front of the others, just like Uchiha Sasuke. In the writer’s opinion, he’s one of the anime characters with the worst personalities. Although he respects his seniors, Ryoma never acts friendly towards them. It’s fair to say that Ryoma is not someone you would hang around with.

But he’s very affectionate towards his pet cat, Karupin. Karupin is considered as a friend by Ryoma since he’s little. Sometimes, Karupin wakes him up in the morning.

3. Pure Genius

Ryoma is probably just a junior high kid, but his skills in tennis are not to be trifled with. Since elementary school, he has won several tournaments in the US. Then, since he went to Seigaku, he has improved his skills. Perhaps it’s also because he’s playing with his seniors, who have great techniques.

With his genius, he can imitate his opponents’ techniques on the spot. In Captain Tsubasa, Ryoma might be similar to Tsubasa Ozora who always finds a way to imitate his opponents’ tricks.

4. Never Won a Match Against His Father

Echizen Ryoma is the son of Echizen Nanjirou, the former Japanese pro tennis player who has won major tournaments in the US. Nanjirou has the epithet ‘Samurai Nanjirou’ due to his looks and playstyle that resembles a Samurai. He’s one of the best players in the anime.

Nanjirou was also the apprentice of Sumire Ryuzaki, Seigaku’s coach when he was a student there. Until Ryoma joins Seigaku, Sumire’s still coaching the team.

Unfortunately, Nanjirou chose to retire early and passed his knowledge of the game to his son, Ryoma. Ryoma, who’s a genius in tennis, has never won a single match against his father. Ryoma’s biggest ambition is not to become the world’s best player, but to defeat his father.
