KOEI TECMO and Team Ninja release Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection on June 10 2021 for PlaySation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, a bundling which consists of three Ninja Gaiden games: Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge complete with each game’s respective Downloadable Contents (DLC).
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection features several unique and awesome ninjas who also appear in Warriors Orochi and Dead or Alive and share some dedicated fanbase. Among those Ninja Gaiden characters to appear in Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, here are six of them!
1. Ryu Hayabusa
Ryu Hayabusa is the main character of Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection and its entire game lists, a ninja master who’s attempting to discover and reclaim a stolen sword while avenging his clan’s massacre. The story in the game is based on Tecmo’s classic Ninja Gaiden game and is integrated into Team Ninja’s Dead or Alive franchise.
As a ninja, Ryu is a master of assassination with proficiencies in executing the opponents mercilessly, cold-blooded and calculated. Due to growing up in a strict environment and some bitter tragedies in his life, Ryu hardens his emotions and performs his job with tight discipline. For the sake of the world’s balance and order, he’s not afraid of any decision he’s going to take.
In fact, Ryu is very much aware of the harsh and cruel way of ninja, especially for the heir of the Hayabusa lineage like him. He has seen countless brutalities in his life, such as the death of his best friend Kureha right in front of him and the massacre of his own clan while he himself was about to be murdered when trying to escape. All of that turns Ryu into a bitter and vengeful person with a fierce fighting spirit against all odds, as he will always prevail and survive for the sake of revenge.
2. Ayane
Ayane is one of the most iconic Ninja Gaiden characters who’s actually from the Dead or Alive series. As a Kunoichi from the Mugen Tenshi clan who continuously assists Ryu, she spent the majority of her childhood as an outcast by the majority of her own clan. Out of pity, the leader of Hajin Mon sect Genra took Ayane as her adoptive daughter.
With the permission from the Mugen Tenshin’s Master and Head Ninja, Shiden, Genra enrolled Ayane to the black operation branch of the clan who’s called Hajin Mon, then trained her with Hajin Mon-style Ninjitsu to help her with her missions. Unlike the main Tenjin Mon sect who is mostly involved in a direct battle, Hajin Mon specializes in the background and trains wizard ninjas with the ninpo abilities.
As a person, Ayane is a bit of a quiet introvert who admires Ryu Hayabusa whom she occasionally calls “Master Ryu” in honor of the difference in their ranks. On the flipside, she is also generally cold and arrogant toward people whom she considers ‘below her,’ and she’s generally pretty cynical and sharp. However, on a rare and extreme occasion, Ayane can also show her soft, fragile and emotional side. Considering her smart intuition, she can quickly rise up from any obstacle in her way.
3. Rachel
Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection also introduces a Western character called Rachel who, along with her twin Alma, suffer from a curse running in their blood that can turn themselves into a demon. During the entire story of Ninja Gaiden, the curse finally engulfed Alma, and Rachel’s heading to an adventure to find Alma knowing that there’s no cure for them.
At first, Rachel appears as a cruel and powerful hunter who questions Ryu’s resolve and strength in defeating the demons. She generally travels and acts alone through the kingdom of Vigoor until she finally explains her part of the story to Ryu, who then saves her life.
As the story progresses, Rachel begins to trust Ryu and offers information like how to reach Doku, though she maintains her strong and harsh personality.

4. Momiji
The other Dead or Alive character who also appears in Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is Momiji, a young woman with a soft and kind personality. Children in her village consider her an elder sister whom they respect.
Like her mentor Ryu Hayabusa, Momiji has a strong will and refuses to become weak as she trains diligently to become one of the deadliest soldiers in Hayabusa village.
Along with her sister Kureha, Momiji grew up to become the Dragon Shrine Maiden who’s tasked to guard an ancient relic passed down from generations to generations from the Ancient Dragon in Hayabusa village and perform the Shrine Maiden ritual to purify the world from evil.
One of the relics that the Dragon Shrine Maiden must protect is the Dragon Eye, a jewelry that is believed to contain the soul of the Ancient Dragon.
However, during the Black Dragon Sword incident, Momiji was heading outside the village on a mission and was shocked to see the entire village and its villagers massacred, including her sister Kureha.
Since then, she began training under the guidance of Ryu and became a professional Kunoichi who also possesses the Shrine Maiden ability to protect Hayabusa village. She always supports Ryu Hayabusa and follows her master wherever he goes.
5. Irene Lew
Considering the majority of Ninja Gaiden characters are traditional characters with old-school Japanese weapons, Irene Law is a breath of fresh air as she appears in Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection who truly represents the West as she uses a more modern, Western weapon. Story-wise, CIA sends her on a secret mission which involves the demons as she uncovers a plan made by the alliance between the Black Spider Ninja clan and the demons to resurrect the Archfiend. Irene must search for Ryu to help him stop the Black Spider Ninja clan from getting the Demon Statue that the Hayabusa Ninja clan possesses, and stop the resurrection of the Archfiend.
Irene is hard worker and brave, capable of doing whatever it takes to fulfill her jobs, and is pretty confident in her skills. She is also an expert in espionage and utilizing firearms of many kinds, ranging from a handgun to a massive RPG bazooka.
Irene also loves Ryu Hayabusa, an affection she shows the first time after she defeats the Demon God Vazdah and hugs Ryu immediately after. In Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, she works with Ayane to support Ryu, a trust she puts highly despite the CIA’s protest that they don’t trust the ninja at all.
6. Kasumi
The main character of the Dead or Alive game also appears in Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection. Kasumi is the second child of Shiden and Ayame who’s born from the head family of the Mugen Tenshin Ninja clan as the second person in the line for the succession of the rulership after her brother Hayate.
After her brother almost got killed in a ninpo duel against their evil uncle Raidou, Kasumi left the village to avenge Hayate and inevitably got branded by the village as a fugitive ninja who violates her sacred oath.
As a result, she is now hunted as the fugitive of her clan, even by her own step sister Ayane. Despite that, her old friend Ryu Hayabusa still supports and protects her.
