Although Dragon Ball Z makes fans think that the series is very slow in terms of pace, the original manga by Akira Toriyama actually has a fast pace. The story will always give a lot where the moments presented are really important.

However, this anime has a way to expand the content by adding a number of additional episodes, aka filler. Although most of the filler episodes are bad, there are some filler episodes that have better quality compared to other shonen anime. Curious what are they? Let's discuss them one by one!

Goku and Krillin Trained with Master Roshi

In extending the training, anime runs the risk of breaking their pace, but that's not the case with Dragon Ball. Goku's training leading up to the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai is unique compared to the others, there's nothing wrong with giving the audience more about this practice and it works.

By simply expanding the training, Goku and Krillin's friendship develops a bit more organically. The audience also can better understand the rigors of their training. Muten Roshi put them in a really difficult situation.

Goku Solo Training

The end of the arc of the Red Ribbon Army marks the first time Dragon Ball has made such a big leap. The famous Dragon Ball series has always carefully switched from one arc to the next. Our first three arcs were introduced to what Dragon Ball is.

One of them is Goku's transition to the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. In his training, Goku not only encounters Tenshinhan and Chaozu early, but this episode literally kills time for Goku to grow his tail back so he can start strengthening it.

The Garlic Jr. Arc

The Garlic Jr. arc got a lot of criticism despite the fact that the filler wasn't bad at all. Animation-wise, this is one of the best original content in all of Dragon Ball Z's saga. Narratively, it's interesting to see the series focus on side characters.

Both Goku and Vegeta were completely absent from the plot, allowing Gohan and Krillin to take the lead roles. Even Kami and Mr. Popo got a role in this arc. After that, we can see the incredible Cell arc.

Peace Before The Cell Games

Even in the manga, there's a bit of a lag before we get to the Cell Games. This is a chance for the heroes to relax before they face an even crazier threat. At one point, this was meant to be the last time Goku lived before this arc.

The anime expanded on this part of the manga and began to highlight Gohan. A fair amount of work was put into perfecting his character, leading Goku to put his trust in his son.

The Afterlife Tournament Arc

Taking a bit of an adaptation from the Freeza arc, the Cell arc doesn't jump straight into the Buu arc. This anime discards the important narrative in Cell Games and then returns to Goku as the main character.

In this filler, there are various characters that are included in it. Despite getting a fair amount of criticism, it's nice to know what Goku is up to after he dies a second time around.

Pre-EoZ Filler

Instead of diving into the next big story, this anime is once again taking an adaptation of the Freeza arc to include filler before the next arc. Even though it's only for 2 episodes, the Buu arc is followed by an enjoyable ending where players can relax following the suspenseful story.

This is the last major filler episode used as a means to highlight Goku as the character and relationship that defines Dragon Ball.

EoZ Filler

In Akira Toriyama's signature style, the end of the Dragon Ball series really comes suddenly. Even though it was clear in hindsight that Toriyama was building towards the conclusion of the series, Goku flew in with Uub so suddenly without any warning or hint.

In the same way, this anime expands on the Pre-EoZ era. What is presented is extraordinary, especially since Pan is present in this filler.
