Indonesian esports has entered its golden era. Over the past five years, the growth of tournaments, player quality, and professionalism in team management has increased significantly. From merely grassroots competitions, Indonesian esports has transformed into a billion-rupiah industry that involves organizations, sponsors, and media outlets.
It has evolved beyond just gaming—Indonesian esports has become a legitimate career path for many. From players, coaches, analysts, and managers to casters, journalists, and content creators, everyone has become part of a thriving ecosystem. One key figure who has witnessed this evolution is Saint de Lucaz, head coach of Team Liquid ID and the Indonesian MLBB national team.
"From my insight throughout esports: It has become a profession and quite stable so far. As long as MLBB, the league, and multiple games still exist, the scene will continue to thrive," SDL said during a recent interview.
"It’s not just about players and management. Other careers have come alive because of esports—like media and many others," he added.
Indonesian Esports Is Growing, But Problems Remain
The growth of Indonesian esports has indeed been dramatic. But as it soars, issues have started to surface—particularly in terms of attitude and effort from newer players.
"What’s developed are media and tournament organizers. But what’s disappearing is the effort from the players. In the past, they really had to grind. Now things are more instant—information is everywhere. Back then, you needed inside connections or had to hustle. Now everything is accessible; you just need to prove you deserve to be in esports," he explained, pointing to a major cultural shift.
"The esports scene is already good, but players nowadays tend to be spoiled," SDL stated candidly. "In any profession, you need channels. And if you don’t have them, then you need to rely on talent and hard work. But in the end, having the right channels still matters," he concluded realistically.
Saint de Lucaz’s reflection served as a hard truth—that while Indonesian esports has grown rapidly, not everyone within it has grown with the same mindset. The esports world is more than just a stage; it is a battlefield of discipline, resilience, and adaptability.
With leagues like MPL ID and MDL ID, plus countless grassroots tournaments, Indonesian esports now offers clearer career paths than ever. However, easy access must be matched by maturity and professionalism from all its stakeholders.
If the foundation is strengthened not just by systems but also by mentality, then Indonesian esports won’t just become big—it will become sustainable and respected on a global scale.
