Aerith Gainsborough is one of the popular characters in Final Fantasy VII. Even years after the release of the game, Aerith remains a favorite character for lots of Final Fantasy and pop-culture fans.

Aside from her looks, Aerith actually has some interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about. So, without further ado, here are some fascinating facts about Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII!

1. Aerith Was the Second Character Designed After Cloud

Aerith was always meant to be one of the main protagonists who play an important role in the game. Therefore, she was the second character designed after Cloud. Whereas the third character designed after Cloud and Aerith was Barrett.

2. Her Design Was the Complete Opposite of Tifa’s

Square Enix seemed to intentionally create the two female main characters in Final Fantasy VII as two complete opposites. Aerith wears a long elegant dress, whereas Tifa wears a rather skimpy tank-top with a miniskirt.

3. Was Initially Designed to be Sephiroth’s Sister or Lover

The designs in Final Fantasy VII underwent numerous changes during its development. And it’s also the case with Aerith and Sephiroth’s relationship. Initially, they were intended to be siblings, which might make Sephiroth a true descendant of the Cetra. This explains why Sephiroth and Aerith share rather similar hairstyles.

The relationship between Aerith and Sephiroth was then changed to be former lovers. However, this probably occurred before the devs were designing Zack.

4. Aerith/Aeris Are Both Correct

For years, Final Fantasy VII fans may have been confused about the right pronunciation or how to spell her name; Aerith or Aeris. Upon its initial release, the default name on her naming screen was Aeris.

However, some of the earliest ads for Final Fantasy VII had her name written as Aerith. Since then, Aerith is the canon name in Kingdom Hearts.

Technically, both names are correct as in Japanese, Aerith is written as Earisu. The “-su” can be written as either “-s” or “-th” in English. However, Aerith was ultimately chosen as it sounds similar to the word “Earth”.

5. Possesses the Highest Magic Stat in the Game

This fact may not be so surprising for most Final Fantasy VII fans. Aerith has the highest magic stat compared to other party members. And, as it turns out, the second character with the highest magic stat is Vincent Valentine, which may come as a surprise for most.

6. Can Actually Become the Most Powerful Fighter

Aerith was basically made as a character who focuses on magic, and she’s not a Fighter. This is because Aerith fights using her staff and her limit break is based on magic effects.

However, Aerith isn’t exclusively assigned as the team healer as players can get a powerful weapon for her and turn her into a Fighter.

Once you reach Train Graveyard in Midgar, there’s a chance to encounter a monster called Eligor. Players can use the Steal command to grab Eligor’s Striking Staff, which can turn Aerith into the character with the highest attack stat.

Once you give Striking Staff to Aerith, she can become the most powerful Fighter in your party until you leave Midgar and obtain more powerful weapons.

7. She Had Never Been in a Romantic Relationship with Zack

Most players and fans were mistakenly thought that Zack Fair used to be in a romantic relationship with Aerith in Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. However, it turned out to be a translation error.

In Final Fantasy VII, Aerith does refer to Zack as her first boyfriend when she talks about him to Cloud.

However, in the Japanese version, Aerith refers to Zack as the first guy she ever liked – which means her feelings for him were never reciprocated.

8. Aerith and Zack’s Voice Actors Are a Couple in Real Life

Aerith and Zack’s voice actors for the Japanese version, Maaya Sakamoto and Kenichi Suzumura got married in 2011. This probably means that both of them met while recording Crisis Core. And, this is perhaps the only thing that makes Aerith-Zack fans happy given that their relationship is full of tragedies.

9. It Could Have Been Barrett

One of the lesser-known facts is that Aerith wasn’t the only candidate to meet their demise in the game. Barrett was the other character who was considered by the devs to be killed by Sephiroth. But the devs decided to kill Aerith instead as they believe that it would have a more devastating effect.

10. Has Unique Dialogues After Her Death

If you force Aerith into your party and continue the game after her death, Aerith will have unique dialogues. These include interactions with the soldiers in Fort Condor, trying to start a fight in the Battle Square, falling down Gaea’s Cliff, and talking to people in Rocket Town.
