1. His Real Name’s Lapis
Some of you may not aware of Android 17’s real name – Lapis, which matches with his twin sister’s, Lazuli. Lapis Lazuli is a deep-blue metamorphic precious stone.
It’s unknown why both Android 17 and 18 don’t use their real name and always go by the numbers given by Dr. Gero after he altered their bodies as part of his experiments.
But it may be because using their real names reminds them of the terrible things Dr. Gero did to them.
2. Was Once a Human
Almost every artificial humans created by Dr. Gero, such as Android 13, 17, 18, and 20, were once human beings before they were kidnapped by Gero and turned into subjects of his experiments. And unfortunately, not much info is known about their past.

3. Technically a Cyborg, Not an Android
Gero has experimented with three different types of Androids in his attempt to defeat Goku. However, they’re technically not Androids – but Cyborgs, which is a more suitable term to use to refer to technologically-enhanced humans.
Gero transferred his brain into a mechanical body to transform himself into a Cyborg, and it’s likely that he did the same thing to Android 17 and 18 after he kidnapped them.
This allowed them to reproduce like normal humans, yet their aging process take a lot longer. Android 17 and 18 no longer need nutrition to survive as most of their organs have been replaced by machines.
Unlike them, Android 16 and 19 are Androids as they were robots. Real Androids lack the understanding of human feelings as they are robots with artificial intelligence.

Almost every Android will short circuit once it comes into contact with water. However, it’s not the case for 17 or 18, as they’re created to fight on Earth, which is 60% water. Therefore, Android 18 can take bath like regular humans without having to worry about getting short-circuited.

However, he eventually makes a cameo appearance near the end of the Buu Saga when Goku gathers all of Earth’s energy for a Spirit Bomb. Goku calls every earthling to give him the power to defeat Kid Buu; Android 17 hears his call and gives him some of his energy. It’s revealed in his cameo appearance that Android 17 becomes a park ranger, protecting the wildlife around a preservation area.
He’s still serving as a park ranger when Goku recruited him in Dragon Ball Super’s Universe Survival Arc.

When Goku spars with Android 17, he doesn’t realize that he has become much stronger than he was back in the Android Saga. Goku even believes that 17 may be stronger than Majin Buu.
8. An Ill-Fated Character
Although Android is a living character now, Android 17 is one of the characters who dies multiple times in any of the timelines or series. In Dragon Ball Z, he was killed after being absorbed by Cell and then annihilated by Majin Buu.

In Dragon Ball Super, Android 17 died protecting Goku. Lastly, Trunks destroyed Android 17 with a Kai explosion in the History of Trunks.
